Elijah refused to believe he couldn’t make this work. Every one of the guys was spoken for— married or practically there. There wouldn’t be any competition for the bouquet.
There was no way he would lose.
Seeing Elijah among the groomsmen yet again, Winona felt the corner of her mouth twitch in a grimace.
He is like a bad penny, she thought. He just keeps turning up.
When they shared their first look before the ceremony, Julian suddenly dropped to one knee and proposed to Lucinda all over again. Serena nearly teared up at the gesture.
Sebastian pulled her close and squeezed her shoulder. “All smiles? You’ve officially gained a nephew today.”
Serena offered a thin, dry smile.
Julian likely hadn’t factored in the hidden cost of marrying a Levine–it was a demotion in disguise. By joining the family, he had effectively trapped himself a full generation below Sebastian. He was no longer a peer to Sebastian and Serena.
A man approached the sign–in table and handed over a gift box.
“This is for the bride. She needs to open it personally.”
The attendant looked up at him. “Can I get a name for the gift, sir?”
He just smiled and stepped away. “Don’t worry about it. The name’s inside the box.”
Instead of entering the reception, he walked away from it.
The attendant stared after him, puzzled. What a strange man, she thought.
“Everyone here?” Sophia asked as she approached the table.
She still had concerns about her daughter settling down so soon, but the way Julian cared for her was undeniable.

If nothing else, Lucinda wasn’t the one getting the short end of the stick in this marriage. For now, that was enough.
Across the banquet hall, as the couple took center stage to exchange rings, Sophia found herself quietly wiping her eyes.
All the arguments and bitter clashes seemed to fade in that moment. Lucinda was still her daughter, after all.
There was a specific kind of weight a mother felt seeing her child step into a new life, one that cut through any logic or doubt.
All her earlier pragmatism faded, leaving only a mother’s simple, desperate hope for Lucinda’s happiness.
When it came time for the bouquet toss, Elijah was already keyed up.
He had thrown money at the problem–handing out millions in cash gifts to secure everyone’s favor–all so he could claim that symbol of luck without a fight.
To his dismay, Lucinda might have put too much force into it. Elijah had calculated exactly where the bouquet would land, but it whooshed wildly off course.
Winona wasn’t about to break a sweat over a bunch of flowers.
Positioned at the very back, she casually checked her phone as if the whole thing didn’t concern her.
Without warning, the bouquet arched through the air and landed squarely in her arms.
Winona stared down at the flowers as if they were a ticking time bomb, her expression one of pure, blank disbelief.
Far across the reception, Elijah was stunned.
Seated below the stage, Sebastian couldn’t suppress a chuckle.
“Well, well. Someone’s careful little plan just backfired.”
Holding the bouquet like it might explode, Winona walked over stiffly and dropped into the seat beside Serena.
“Oh my, oh my.” Serena teased, nudging her. “Your turn next, huh?”
Elijah watched Winona from an angle across the table. His gaze was burning and focused, thick

While the bouquet hadn’t landed in his hands, seeing it in hers felt like the same win.
Elijah was secretly ecstatic. If fate had handed Winona the bouquet, maybe it meant reconciliation. Maybe even a wedding.
Watching Elijah’s misplaced look of triumph, Sebastian pulled his lips into a dry, mirthless line as he sent a message to him.
“What’s got you looking so smug?”
Elijah stared at his phone screen, his jaw tightening as he read the words again. His fingers flew across the glass, the haptic clicks of the keyboard sounding like a rapid–fire retaliation.
“I’m in a good mood. Is that a crime? Stay in your lane.”
“Sure. Your ex is about to marry someone else, and you’re over here celebrating. Guess all you’ve got left is a forced smile.”
Unbelievable, Elijah thought. Is it physically impossible for Sebastian to say something -anything— remotely decent?
Does he always have to twist the knife?
By the end of it all, Lucinda felt like she had run a marathon. She hadn’t realized getting married was this draining–her face was frozen in a smile.
She had made it her mission to get through the day without crying, and she had delivered. From the walk down the aisle to the final toast, she hadn’t shed a single tear.
Julian, however, was a bit put out by her perfect composure. In her mind, he jokingly questioned the depth of her feelings. Surely a woman head–over–heels would have been moved to tears at least once.
They had an after–party scheduled, but Lucinda was completely spent and decided to call it off.
She wanted nothing but rest and a quiet moment to go through the cash gifts.
Julian followed her lead without a word of protest.
In the middle of the stack, a finely wrapped box caught Lucinda’s eye. She stilled for a
