Broken Vows and Buried Twins novel Chapter 143

Hearing those words, Caden froze completely.

Before the little boy could even process what was happening, Julian had already stood up and was striding purposefully toward the dining area.

The dining room and the living room were only separated by a short hallway.

Naturally, Julian and Seraphina had heard every word Hester had just said.

Julian walked over, glaring darkly at Hester.

"Hester, what do you think you're doing?"

"Isn't it obvious?" Hester met Julian's gaze, her expression completely flat. "I'm explaining the truth to Caden and correcting our relationship."

"You..."

"Daddy!" Caden suddenly scrambled down from his high chair, ran over, and hugged Julian's leg tightly. He tilted his head back, looking up at him pleadingly. "Daddy, Mommy is lying, right?"

As he asked, tears welled up in his eyes, but he stubbornly fought them back.

Julian crouched down and gently ruffled the boy's hair. "Be a good boy, Caden. Daddy will explain everything properly later. For now, why don't you go play outside with Lena? I'll come find you in a little bit, okay?"

Caden furiously shook his head. "No! You want to send me away again. You definitely have a secret!"

Hearing this, Julian furrowed his brows slightly.

A five-year-old was already capable of distinguishing truth from lies.

Hester's tone had been deadly serious just now, and Caden possessed enough awareness to sense that something was deeply wrong.

"He is going to find out sooner or later," Hester said, looking calmly at Julian. "It's better to just be direct and honest now. If you wait to correct him after he forms an even deeper emotional attachment, the psychological blow to the child will only be worse."

Julian stared at Hester.

Her unshakeable calmness made her feel like a stranger.

She was never like this before.

Hester reached out and gently stroked his hair.

Honestly, after living with Caden for the past few days, it was impossible for Hester not to have developed any affection for him.

Caden was an incredibly well-behaved and sensible boy. Ever since he realized she was pregnant, he had been extra careful around her, making sure never to bump her stomach. In many ways, he acted like a little adult, constantly reminding her to rest and always offering her the first bite of any delicious food or drink he had.

Hester never imagined she would end up being 'taken care of' by a five-year-old child.

Children who were forced to be this sensible always made a person's heart ache.

If Seraphina hadn't returned, Hester truly wouldn't have minded letting Caden stay with her until he fully recovered his memory.

But Seraphina was back now, and that changed everything.

Even though she didn't know Seraphina, Hester fully understood that forcing a mother to watch the child she carried for nine months call another woman 'Mommy' was nothing short of psychological torture.

Seraphina had lost her husband while pregnant, plunging her into severe depression. After giving birth, that same illness forced her to be separated from Caden. For Seraphina, the past five years must have been an agonizingly long ordeal.
