Hester paused and sighed. "I'm telling you all of this because I don't want you to end up like me. Look at my situation. Ten years of one-sided devotion. I chose Julian without a second thought. After we got married, I genuinely believed my gamble had paid off. But look what I have to show for it now."
Sabrina looked at Hester, her heart aching as she threw her arms around her in a tight hug.
"Hester, you are amazing. You're brilliant and brave. Julian is the one who doesn't know how to cherish you. He doesn't deserve you! If you two actually divorce, it will be the biggest loss of his entire life!"
Hester smiled softly. "Alright, let's not dwell on that. As long as you know how to handle the Declan situation, I'm relieved. Come on, eat your cake. Are you still busy later today?"
"Not busy at all!" Sabrina pulled back and looked at Hester with wide, pleading almond eyes, blinking rapidly. "Can you take me in for the night?"
"I can take you in, but you'll have to prep the guest room yourself. I don't have a housekeeper right now."
"That's perfectly fine!" Sabrina replied. "But are you planning to hire a new one?"
"Not right now," Hester said. "Julian has likely already given instructions to all the local agencies. Anyone I hire will probably just be another one of his spies."
"But it's not safe for a pregnant woman to live completely alone!"
"We'll see." Hester rested a hand on her stomach, her eyelashes fluttering downward.
Beneath those thick lashes, her deepest thoughts remained hidden.
...
That night, Sabrina stayed over.
Even though Sabrina logically understood everything Hester had told her, giving up on someone you've loved for years isn't something you can just switch off overnight.
Hester could tell her friend was feeling down, so she ordered a massive takeout spread of Sabrina's favorite spicy seafood boil and grilled fish. She even pulled out a prized bottle of red wine from her collection.
Sabrina made a half-hearted attempt to be polite, worrying aloud that a pregnant woman shouldn't have to take care of her if she got drunk, but she didn't hesitate for a second when it came to actually eating and drinking.
She popped the cork, taking massive bites of grilled fish and crawfish, washing it all down with generous gulps of red wine.
Hester sat across from her, raising her glass of fresh juice to clink against Sabrina's wine glass.
