Julian looked at Seraphina, finally letting out a sigh. "Will you be alright by yourself?"
"I'm not the one who's pregnant. It's just an ultrasound; I'll be perfectly fine." Seraphina offered him a gentle, reassuring smile, playing the role of the perfect sister-in-law deeply concerned for her brother-in-law's marriage.
Moved by her understanding, Julian nodded in agreement, then turned and walked up to the office door. He knocked lightly, turned the handle, and stepped inside.
Seraphina watched the door close behind him, the gentle smile on her face rapidly fading. Looking down at the lab slip in her hands, her eyes were completely devoid of warmth.
...
Inside the doctor's office.
When Julian walked in, Hester was just taking her card back from the desk.
Seeing Julian, Dr. Crane immediately stood up to shake his hand. "Mr. Weston. Your sister-in-law just headed out to get her ultrasound."
"Thank you for taking care of her, Dr. Crane." Julian shook the doctor's hand, his eyes sliding over to Hester who stood nearby. "Is my wife's checkup going smoothly?"
Dr. Crane smiled warmly. "Mrs. Weston is here for her 12-week comprehensive checkup, so she needs to do a fasting blood test first. I was actually just asking why she came alone today. The blood draw requires several vials, and since she's been fasting, it's very common for pregnant women to experience severe dizziness or weakness. She really should have a family member with her."
Listening to Dr. Crane, Julian was immediately reminded of Hester's pregnancy with the twins.
During that exact same 12-week checkup, Hester had nearly fainted right after having her blood drawn.
Hester had to be perfectly aware of her own physical limits, yet she still stubbornly came alone out of pure spite.
Thinking of this, the anger simmering in Julian's chest flared up again.
...
After stepping out of the office, Hester completely ignored Julian, walking purposefully toward the laboratory department.
Julian took a few long strides to catch up, grabbing her wrist tightly.
"Hester, there has to be a limit to your tantrums. How could you come to a comprehensive prenatal checkup completely alone? Even if you don't care about your own well-being, you should at least consider the baby."
Being grabbed, Hester had no choice but to stop. She looked at him, her face filled with absolute disgust. "Who told you I came alone?"
Julian froze.
Before he could even process her words, a loud shout echoed down the hall.
"Hester!"
