Since he was Jasper’s cousin, Hester didn't see the point in hiding it.
“It’s a divorce case,” she said calmly.
Jett froze.
A divorce?!
Jasper watched his cousin’s brain short-circuit and fought back a smirk.
“You... look very young for that,” Jett managed to say, his charming smile turning incredibly stiff. “But, uh, my cousin is great at divorce law too. I’m sure it’s in the bag.”
“Yes, I have complete faith in Mr. Kane.” Hester clearly had no desire to dwell on the topic. She turned her attention to Jasper. “Gigi took a long nap with me this afternoon, so she’s probably going to be up late tonight.”
Jasper nodded. “Thank you for watching her today. I’m sorry if it was a hassle.”
“I’m her godmother; I love taking care of her. Besides, she’s an absolute sweetheart. I enjoy spending time with her.”
Jasper smiled warmly. “I just worry about you overexerting yourself. With the pregnancy, you really need to be resting as much as possible.”
At the mention of it, Hester subconsciously touched her stomach. “I’m fine. I’m in my second trimester, and the doctor actually recommended staying active.”
“Pregnant?!”
This time, Jett’s jaw practically hit the floor. The shock was so profound that his flawless, movie-star composure completely shattered.
His dramatic reaction earned a puzzled look from Hester.
Jasper ignored him and addressed Hester. “By the way, when I came in, Ms. Crane was looking for you. I think she needed to speak with you.”
“Alright, I’ll go see what she needs. I’ll leave Gigi with you for now.”
“Sounds good,” Jasper agreed.
...
Once Hester was out of earshot, Jasper turned to his cousin.
Jett was still staring at the spot where Hester had disappeared, looking utterly shell-shocked.
“Have you ever heard of Julian Weston from Northwood City?” Jasper asked coolly.
Jasper froze.
A look of profound realization washed over Jett’s face. “Oh my God! You sneaky bastard. You’re using Julian Weston to scare me off because you want her for yourself!”
Jasper glared at him. “Shut up.”
“You totally have a thing for her, don’t you?” Jett stepped closer, dropping his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “Look, she’s gorgeous; I don’t blame you. But be a man and admit it instead of acting like a jealous gatekeeper!”
Jasper’s expression turned lethal. “Say one more word, and I will actually put you in the hospital.”
“Ooh, the great lawyer is getting defensive! Hit a nerve, did I?” Jett took a few strategic steps backward, maintaining a safe distance.
He grinned, noticing the faint red tinge on Jasper’s ears. “Look, man, we’re family. But all’s fair in love and war. From this second on, may the best man win. Deal?”
Jasper didn't answer.
Whether it was a deal or not remained to be seen.
Because the very next morning, two completely uninvited guests arrived at the inn.
