I didn’t bother with her. I just turned around, ready to leave.

But Claire picked up her phone right away. “Laird, get me Mercy General, the one under our company. Put me through to hematology...”

Her words hung in the air. I stopped cold.

Claire had her hands in everything. If she said no more treatment, that meant Darleen’s care ended here and now.

Money wouldn’t help either. She could get the head doctor transferred away, or even team up with other hospitals to block Darleen from getting admitted anywhere.

I couldn’t believe she’d actually go this far for Garrison. She was really going to cut Darleen off, just like that.

“I’ll do it!” I shouted, spinning back to face her.

She saw I’d finally caved and tossed the car keys at me.

“Get it done fast. If you mess up his treatment, you’ll deal with the fallout.”

The keys hit the floor at my feet. I bent to pick them up, and pain shot through my knee.

I looked down and saw shards of glass stuck in my palm. I clenched my teeth, pulled out the biggest piece myself, and wrapped my hand with a napkin from the table.

Once I got out, everyone kept urging me to drive faster, crowding around Garrison and trying to comfort him.

I didn’t want any of them to find out about Darleen, so I took them straight to Deanna’s hospital.

As soon as we pulled up, they all rushed Garrison into the ER. Claire told me to follow.

“You’re not going anywhere. We might need you,” she said.

I didn’t argue. I just followed and watched them scramble around, cleaning up his wounds and patching him up.

I sat alone in the waiting area.

“How did this patient end up like this?” a doctor asked. “So many cuts and shards. This’ll take a while.”

“Honestly, I think we should admit him. It’s safer.”

Claire explained everything quickly, and the doctor called for more nurses.

“Family members, please wait outside,” he said. “We’ve got enough hands in here. Too many people just get in the way.”
