Building Her Throne Burying My Heart (Claire) novel Chapter 104

“How can you get things so wrong? I’m going to report you!”

Deanna didn’t even flinch. Her voice was calm and steady. “You’re welcome to do that. But I’m telling you now, if you try to stop me from treating any other patient, I’ll call security.”

Alice was stunned into silence. She could only watch as Deanna led me away. Claire wasn’t there just then. She was off somewhere, paying Garrison’s hospital fees.

When Claire came back, Alice went straight to her, making the story sound even more dramatic than it really was. Claire was already in a bad mood, so it didn’t take much to make her even angrier.

“What was that woman’s name? Do you remember?” Claire asked, her tone sharp.

Alice thought for a second. “I looked at her name tag. I think it said Deanna.”

As soon as Claire heard the name, her expression changed. Of course, only Deanna would take my side.

“I get it. You stay here. I’ll be right back.”

Deanna took me to another room to clean up my wounds.

“Take off your pants,” she said.

I hesitated, feeling awkward. “It’s fine, really. Just clean my hand.”

She ignored me and grabbed a pair of scissors, cutting my pant leg open with practiced hands.

“Don’t move. If you do, I can’t promise my hand won’t slip.”

I lay back on the bed, helpless as she cut all the way up to my knee. She paused when she saw all the tiny wounds, staring for a long moment. I could see her trying to imagine how much it must have hurt with every step I took.

Garrison had fallen backwards, and the table had shielded him from most of the debris. But when Claire pushed me, I ended up on my knees in a pile of broken glass. The pain was so sharp and sudden that my mind went completely blank.

I hadn’t said a word at the time. I hadn’t let it show on my face.

I knew nobody cared. Nobody felt sorry for me. Nobody would ever ask if I was hurting.
