"Where are you going?"
Claire walked over and glanced at my legs. She didn’t bother to hide her disapproval at the way my shorts looked, frowning a little.
“There’s a spare pair of pants in the car. Go change.”
I half expected her to ask how I was feeling, or at least suggest I go home and rest after everything that just happened. But she didn’t. She just said, “Change your clothes and wait for me in the lobby.”
I was so tired and sore. All I wanted was to go home and crawl into bed.
“I want to go home. My legs really hurt. I can’t drive like this. I’ll have Jasper pick you up instead.”
I remembered Deanna saying that the ones who make the most noise get what they want, so I did my best to look as miserable as possible.
Claire looked at my legs again. The injuries were obvious, and she hesitated for a second before giving in. “Fine, you can go home. But you need to apologize to Garrison first. You were in the wrong.”
I stared at her in disbelief. She actually wanted me to apologize to Garrison.
But I wasn’t about to take the blame for something I didn’t do.
“I told you, I didn’t push him. I’m not apologizing.”
Seeing I wasn’t going to budge, and with a crowd starting to form, Claire’s voice rose. “Garrison is hurt, and you’re still denying it? The only people there were you and him. So what, he just fell on his own?”
I met her eyes. “That’s exactly what I’ve been saying. He did it himself, just to set me up. Believe whatever you want, but I’m not apologizing.”
Claire looked at me like I’d lost my mind.
She stepped close, jabbing her finger at me. “Are you serious? You think he’s crazy enough to hurt himself just to frame you? Can’t you be reasonable for once?”
“Everyone saw what happened, and you’re still lying. Do you think everyone here is blind?”
“Or maybe you still think I’m as gullible as I used to be, ready to believe anything you say?”
