“You’re not a kid anymore. You should be responsible for what you do.”
“And honestly, I’m done with your immature attitude. I’m marrying Garrison because he’s worth it.”
“What right do you have to take it out on him? What gives you the right?”
Claire’s words hit me hard. I couldn’t find anything to say, but the pain stung even more.
I squeezed my fists and forced out a bitter smile.
“Alright. Fine. From now on, whatever you do, it’s got nothing to do with me. Whoever you marry, it has nothing to do with me either.”
“I’ll apologize, but not because I pushed him. I’m only doing this for my foster mother.”
I turned away and went to the emergency room bed nearby. Garrison was already cleaned up, his wounds treated.
If he hadn’t grabbed the edge of the table, he wouldn’t have hit it, and the glasses wouldn’t have shattered on him. Most importantly, he made sure to protect himself from any real harm. Compared to him, my injuries were worse.
Yet all the attention and sympathy went to him.
I couldn’t help but feel jealous.
He saw me and his face lit up with a sly grin. He lowered his voice. “Well? Not bad, right? My acting was pretty solid.”
Looking at his shameless smirk, I had to bite back my anger. My smile was tight, nothing genuine about it.
“Yeah, perfect performance. Congrats, you pulled it off again.”
“But honestly, how long do you think a relationship built on lies like this will last?”
Garrison paused for a second, then that wicked smile crept back.
“So what? At least I have her now. What do you have?”
He looked right at me, all sincere, and reached out his hand like he really wanted to make peace.
Just seeing it made me feel sick. I lied and said my hand was hurt, so I couldn’t shake.
Claire cut in. “Can’t you use your other hand?”
She wasn’t giving me any choice, forcing me to make peace with the guy who had set me up, right in front of her. I felt disgusted, but for Darleen’s sake, I swallowed it down.
I switched hands and reached out. Garrison squeezed my hand tight and smiled.
“I hope we can all get along. Claire will be my wife soon, which makes her your sister-in-law. Isn’t that right, Lambert?”
He looked at me, waiting for a response.
His hand in mine felt like grabbing a handful of flies.
