Just a minute ago, she’d rather talk about anything else than actually answer me.

I yanked my hand out of Claire’s grip. “I don’t need you fussing over me. I’m going to jump in the pool. I need to cool off.”

I stumbled to the back door, still feeling fuzzy, and tried to pull it open. Claire came up behind me and slammed it shut with her foot. The bang echoed through the house.

She grabbed my arm and pulled me back so hard I almost lost my balance. I would’ve hit the floor if she hadn’t caught me at the last second.

“Go lie down,” she snapped.

Her roughness only made my head spin worse. I could barely focus, just staring at her.

“I’m not going. I want to swim. The water’s cold. I need that right now.”

Ever since I’d had that drink, the heat in my body hadn’t gone away. If anything, it kept building, burning under my skin, twisting my stomach until I felt sick and lightheaded. I tried shaking my head to clear it, but that just made things worse. What was wrong with me?

I thought back to what I’d just had. That drink... Was it alcohol? It kind of looked like it, didn’t it?

Claire wasn’t giving up. She tried to drag me back toward my room. “Go lie down. Now.”

I dug my heels in and pulled toward the backyard. “I want to swim. I can’t take this. I feel horrible.”

She was so frustrated she finally let go. I dropped right onto my butt on the floor.

“You’ve got a fever, you’ve been drinking, and now you want to go swimming? Seriously, have you lost your mind?”

I muttered, “I didn’t drink. It was just some soda or something.”

Claire stormed off to the table, grabbed a bottle, and shoved it in my face. “Look at what you drank.”

I took the bottle, squinting to focus on the label. Yep. It was definitely alcohol. Strong, too.

No wonder I felt like my brain was melting.

“You drank more than half the bottle. Did you think it was iced tea or something?”
