Building Her Throne Burying My Heart (Claire) novel Chapter 93

She stood there for a long time, not moving, her breath caught in her chest. Finally, she let out a slow, steady exhale.

“If you want me to let you go, it’s only happening when one of us is dead. And trust me, it’s not going to be me.”

“So, if you’re set on dying, do it somewhere else. Don’t you dare die in my house.”

Her voice was so cold, every word felt like a knife. It shredded my heart, then ground up the pieces until nothing was left.

After that, I just gave up. There was nothing left to ask. We were both headed in totally different directions, and there was no turning back.

I glanced at the moonlight outside, feeling a wave of disappointment wash over me. I tried to settle back down, but before I could, she rushed over, grabbed my shirt, and dragged me to the bedroom door. She shoved me inside without a word.

Sleeping on the floor had been miserable, so I climbed onto the bed. The blankets were warm, but they didn’t comfort me. Instead, all I felt was this dull, aching sadness.

It was like everything was either icy cold or burning hot, and I was stuck in the middle, completely lost.

I didn’t even know what I was feeling anymore. Half-awake, half-pouting, I muttered, “Fine, you can leave. I don’t want to see you either. Just like you don’t want to see me.”

I turned away from her, closed my eyes, and pretended I was asleep. I couldn’t see her face, but I could feel her staring at my back. It was sharp, almost painful, like her gaze could cut right through me.

Somewhere in the blur of the night, I felt her taking my temperature, giving me medicine for my fever, and sticking a cooling patch on my forehead. The door opened and closed so many times I lost count, and it wasn’t until morning that everything finally went quiet.

That’s when the fever started to fade, and for the first time, I actually slept deeply.

When I woke up, the fever was gone, but I was weak and sore everywhere. My throat was raw, and my stomach felt empty.

I spent the next half hour replaying everything that happened the night before. Before I could finish sorting it all out, I heard Susan shouting from outside.
