Cynthia was determined to free her ankle from the slipper right then and there. She gathered all her strength for one final, mighty tug, but the slipper remained stubbornly in place. The force of her pull, however, sent her stumbling backward.

Dominic caught her, a wry chuckle escaping his lips. "I've never met anyone so impossibly stubborn."

Cynthia took a deep breath and muttered, "This is all your fault!"

If he hadn't held the key up so high, she never would have tried to jump for it, and she wouldn't have this ridiculous slipper stuck on her ankle. By now, she was exhausted and starving, feeling completely drained of energy. She'd been staking out the place since she left work, waiting until the dead of night to climb the wall, and the effort had taken its toll. She rarely exercised, and all she wanted to do was collapse.

After all the fuss, she had no desire to drive herself home. Besides, Dominic clearly wasn't going to give her the key anyway.

She sighed, looked up at him with pleading eyes, and said weakly, "Let's just go back."

"Where's your car?"

Dominic pointed to a spot down the road, and Cynthia started walking in that direction. But with one foot essentially bare, every step on the gravel felt like walking on hot coals. The constant, sharp discomfort made her gait awkward and slow.

Watching her hobble away, Dominic let out a soft, resigned laugh. He closed the distance between them in a few long strides and grabbed her wrist.
