Dominic was already looking her way. He quickly dropped his gaze back to his phone, his long, elegant fingers tapping across the screen.
A few seconds later, another message arrived.
[You've been starving all day. Eating something that spicy will upset your stomach. Do you want me to bother the Kingsley family to get you another appointment?]
Cynthia stared at the message, stunned.
Her sister’s specialist, Allison… Dominic had been the one to ask the Kingsley family to pull strings for that appointment?
Her hand tightened around her phone.
It made sense. Getting a consultation with a leading expert like Allison wasn't easy. Her sister was only in the early stages of stomach cancer; without connections, she would have never become Allison’s patient.
An undeniable flutter started in Cynthia’s chest, her heart hammering as if it wanted to escape her ribs.
She looked out the window again.
The owner of the barbecue stand handed Dominic the bag of freshly grilled kebabs.
Dominic took it.
Smoke swirled around the stand, and Cynthia had a stray thought: he was definitely going to smell like grease and smoke now. He was so meticulous about his appearance, so clean. He would hate having that kind of smell on him.
But instead of hesitating, he walked directly back to the car.
He came to the passenger side and handed her the bag.
Cynthia took it with both hands and started to open her door. "I'll just eat out here. The smell is pretty strong, it might linger if I bring it…"
Dominic pushed the door shut again.
"Don't waste time, it's getting late. You can eat in the car or wait till we get home, it doesn't matter."
Cynthia had no choice but to settle back into her seat.
Dominic got back into the driver's side and started the car, heading back to his place.
She kept the bag of food sealed the entire ride, cracking the window to air out the car, terrified the smell would stick to the interior.
