Called Off the Wedding, Left Him Bankrupt novel Chapter 398

"Are you hoping I'll praise you for having an iron stomach?"

Cynthia shook her head and looked up at him, her dark eyes clear and bright. "I wanted to find the evidence as quickly as possible."

Dominic's cold, narrow eyes studied her. "I thought you wanted to let him off the hook. Why bother looking for evidence?"

She met his gaze directly. "The evidence is to convict Benedict, and to prove to you that I'm telling the truth. To make you trust me."

A detached, mocking curve appeared on his lips. "My trust doesn't seem all that important to you."

"It is," Cynthia said, her voice low but firm. "We'll be working together in the future, so your trust is very important to me."

At that, a faint, almost dismissive smile flickered in his eyes. "Didn't your sister ever teach you how to please me? How to make me happy?"

He had been on the verge of softening, and then she'd brought up business.

Cynthia shook her head. "No."

Dominic walked back to the car and tossed the pack of cigarettes onto the dashboard. "Then what did she teach you?"

Again, she shook her head. "Nothing."

She could hardly tell him that her sister had advised her to act cute and sweet with him. Outside of her sister, she hadn't acted that way with anyone in years, not even with Benedict during their entire relationship.

Dominic's eyes narrowed. "Are you sure?"

Cynthia nodded. "I'm sure."

He leaned closer, his voice low as he mercilessly called her out. "You're lying."
