Terence sneered. “Worthy or not, is that for you to decide?”
Natalie’s eyes narrowed. How did Marie still have the gall to slander her?
Marie faltered for a moment but refused to back down.
“Mr. Lockwood, I’m only trying to help you. I don’t want you to be deceived by her. This is a woman who was disrespectful to her mother-in-law and to me. Forget Darren, even her own son dislikes her. When everyone in a person’s life dislikes them, it’s because there’s something fundamentally wrong with them!”
“Let’s leave the other things aside,” Terence said, his voice dripping with contempt. “You claim she was disrespectful to you? Why on earth should she respect you? Your family are quite the bullies. Cheating on her wasn’t enough for you; you had to make her wait on you hand and foot. You people are disgusting.”
“Natalie must have told you that, Mr. Lockwood! She’s a liar, making up stories. Her rotten character comes from her parents. Her mother sells vegetables at the market, and her father is a drunk and a gambling addict. Whenever he lost, he would sell her off to old men. Who knows how many times it happened?
One time, Darren happened to see it and saved her. Next thing you know, she turned up pregnant. Darren, being a good man, was trapped. She used that to get into the Cross family, and now she’s trying to climb even higher.”
The vicious lies were more than Natalie could bear.
“Marie, you—”
Before Natalie could take a step forward, a small figure darted past her, hauling a bucket of water. With a great splash, he doused Marie from head to toe.
“Ah!”
Marie shrieked as the cold water drenched her, turning her into a pathetic, dripping mess. The reporters’ cameras clicked and flashed relentlessly.
