“Are you trying to dismiss a beggar?” Old Mr. Fairchild thundered. “Is that all my life and your daughter’s life are worth to you? A mere two million?”
“Dad, please reconsider. It’s not too late to take it back. I can be the one to offer her the two million.”
“You will shut your mouth!”
Old Mr. Fairchild was furious. Natalie had overheard their conversation.
She knew how much the house meant to Clara.
“Ms. Fairchild, you don’t need to worry,” Natalie said calmly. “Old Mr. Fairchild offered me this house out of kindness, worried that I wouldn’t have a roof over my head. It was a gesture of a senior caring for a junior, but I have no intention of accepting it. You can rest assured.”
“Natalie, if you do this, Old Mr. Wycliffe and the others will laugh at me,” Old Mr. Fairchild insisted. “I’ve given it to you, so you must accept it.”
“Old Mr. Fairchild, I truly don’t need such a large house. Besides, this is something you worked hard to build. It should be passed down to your descendants, not to an outsider like me.”
“Natalie, no. You must take this house.”
Just then, Terence pulled Natalie to his side, his voice smooth as flowing water. “Mr. Fairchild, Natalie has no need for a two-hundred-million-dollar dowry. She herself is the world’s most precious treasure. My Lockwood family owns several villas in this area; we have no need for one more from you.”
The crowd gasped in envy. Natalie was truly fortunate. The Lockwood family’s real estate portfolio was practically endless.
