Natalie edged closer to Charles Fairchild. "Mr. Fairchild, I don't know your grandson. If he found out about this, he'd be very uncomfortable."
Natalie wondered if Mr. Fairchild might retract his statement.
"Even if he finds it difficult now, he'll thank me for it later. I'm his grandfather. Would I really do him wrong?"
Natalie was stunned. How had things become so complicated?
Just then, she spotted Darren behind the crowd of reporters.
When did he get here?
Did Mr. Fairchild say that on purpose because he saw Darren arrive?
"Natalie, let's head back. Don't waste your time with the old man."
Terence Lockwood was already back in the car, and Lucas was pulling Natalie's hand, urging her to leave.
Natalie turned to Old Mr. Fairchild. "Mr. Fairchild, we're leaving now. You can have the house back. I have a job with the Lockwood family that includes room and board, which is wonderful. I'll be going now."
Trying to explain would only make things worse. It was better to make a quick retreat.
Darren saw Natalie about to leave, but the swarm of reporters blocked his way. He couldn't get through and could only watch helplessly as she slipped into the Lockwood family's car.
At that moment, Marie, soaked to the bone, was practically fuming. It was bad enough that Natalie had won Mr. Fairchild's favor and was being offered a house. But for him to offer his grandson in marriage? His grandson was Nicholas, the future heir to the Fairchild family!
It was infuriating. She had come today to see Natalie humiliated, not to watch her being fought over by powerful families. It drove her mad. She refused to believe this was happening.
...
The black Maybach sped down the road.
Natalie's mood felt as light as the speeding car. The rumor was finally broken. No one would be saying she was seducing a man forty years her senior anymore.
Lucas immediately chimed in excitedly, "Of course she will! My daddy is the best person in the world. He's handsome, makes a lot of money, and he's thoughtful."
Normally, Lucas might have made a sarcastic comment, but not now. He was afraid that saying anything negative might sway Natalie's decision, so he had to praise his dad.
Terence wasn't used to hearing his eldest son praise him.
"Lucas, you're really fighting for this, aren't you?"
"Thank you, you're all so kind. You did all that to clear up those rumors for me. You saw Darren down there, so you said those things on purpose to provoke him and stand up for me. I'm truly grateful."
Natalie knew that both Terence Lockwood and old Mr. Fairchild had said what they did in front of all those reporters to make one thing clear: she was not the one who had been abandoned.
People shouldn't try to bully her anymore, because she had powerful people on her side.
"So that scumbag was really there. If I'd seen him, I would've gone down and punched him," Lucas grumbled.

Time for Marie to get her end, this has gone on way too long, time to move on. It’s getting boring....
Payback time. Waiting for chapters 321 onwards!...
I love the sarcastic comebacks. Quite amusing!...
