"You said it yourself—*was*. Besides, she came here looking for trouble and tried to steal from me. Am I supposed to put her on a pedestal?"
"Gimme that!" Lucas snatched the medicine right out of Victoria's hands. He walked over to Natalie and said, "Natalie, I got the medicine back."
"Since we have the medicine, let's go," Natalie said.
"Yeah, let's go," Lucas added. "Too much trash in here, the air is bad."
"You…"
Victoria never thought she'd be so infuriated by a five-year-old child.
"Indeed, the atmosphere is unpleasant. Let's go," Natalie agreed.
As Natalie and the others walked out, Darren, unwilling to give up, grabbed her hand. "Mom isn't feeling well. Aren't you going to come home and check on her?"
"Victoria just said her illness was treated by her elder daughter-in-law. She should go see her. My skills are subpar. I wouldn't want to delay her treatment."
With that, Natalie pulled Darren's hand off her arm.
Darren was livid.
Back in the car, Natalie's eyes were dark and troubled.
After all, she had cared for Victoria for so long. When she was paralyzed, Natalie had tended to her personally, brewing every single dose of herbal medicine herself. In the end, all her efforts were deemed worthless in their eyes. She suddenly felt ridiculous.
Whether it was her mother-in-law, Darren, or even her own son, in their eyes, she was useless.
Terence seemed to sense her unhappiness. He said lightly, "Some blind men, upon regaining their sight, immediately throw away their cane, or even destroy it. That's because the cane is a witness to their shameful past. It's not the cane's fault. It's that some people... don't deserve to be called human."
Natalie looked at Terence. He always seemed to sense her emotional shifts, as if he could hear her innermost thoughts.
