“I’m Terence’s mother, Catherine Lockwood. I imagine the matriarch has already told you everything. Are you heading back to pack your bags now?”
“Mrs. Lockwood, I’ve already explained to your mother-in-law that my relationship with Terence isn't what you think. He was just helping me out. To clear up any confusion, I should leave the Lockwood family, but I can’t leave just yet.”
“You’re not leaving? The matriarch is no fool. You think she’ll allow you to stay?”
Mrs. Lockwood’s eyes were sharp, but Natalie remained calm.
“Whether she allows it or not, I can’t go right now.”
“You’ve got some nerve, defying her like that. Do you think you can just outlast her and sponge off this family forever?”
“I have absolutely no intention of doing that. I will leave as soon as I’ve cured Terence’s legs and helped Liana speak.”
Natalie’s words sent a jolt through Mrs. Lockwood.
It was a promise she had longed to hear, yet one that no doctor had ever dared to make.
After countless disappointments, she was hearing it now, so unexpectedly.
She struggled to maintain her composure. “Help Terence walk again? Do you know how many doctors have tried? His condition is irreversible. And that poor girl Liana is destined to be mute for the rest of her life.”
Saying those words felt like a knife twisting in her own heart.
Her gaze on Natalie sharpened.
“If you’re waiting for his legs to heal and for Liana to speak, you really are planning to stay with the Lockwood family forever.”
