Natalie offered a faint, wry smile. Whenever there was a conflict, his solution was to change the subject to food.
How had she never noticed before that his answer to everything was dinner?
Victoria cooed at Marie, "Marie, don't lower yourself to her level. You've had a long day and you’re exhausted. You need to eat more. You've gotten so thin lately, working so hard on the Fairchild deal, only to have it ruined by someone else's incompetence. My heart aches for you. Don't worry, your mother-in-law sees all the effort you've put in."
Her efforts were seen and appreciated.
But what about Natalie's efforts?
Mrs. Cross seemed to have conveniently forgotten that five years ago, she was the one lying in bed, paralyzed from a stroke. Who was it that had nursed her, treated her, and allowed her to stand here today, pointing fingers?
It seemed all the rare herbs she had painstakingly sourced for her were wasted on a dog. She wouldn't bother making any more medicinal meals for her.
Suddenly, a hand closed around hers. She heard Darren's low voice.
"We waited all day at the Fairchild offices, but Mr. Fairchild deliberately avoided us. Marie has never been humiliated like that. She poured her heart and soul into this deal, and now it's been destroyed for no reason. She's not in a good mood, so don't argue with her."
"What exactly do you want me not to argue with her about? The part where she blamed me for the failed project, or the part where she called me useless?"
Darren was visibly flustered.
"She went too far. I'll apologize on her behalf, alright?"
Natalie let out a cold laugh, enunciating each word. "You'll apologize on her behalf? Ha. You are *my* husband."
It must be because he'd been treating her better lately, letting her take his kindness for granted. He needed to let her cool off.
When Darren reached the dining table, his anger began to subside.
The table was laden with a lavish spread: Roast Prime Rib with Herb Jus, Honey, Glazed Roasted Chicken, Garlic Butter Shrimp Skewers, and four other dishes.
It must have been a lot of work to prepare all this. He suddenly regretted his harsh tone. This was her way of apologizing.
"Well, that Natalie still knows her place. She cooked all this. Marie, you have to eat more."
Marie's expression was haughty. The country bumpkin’s cooking was, admittedly, decent. Being served by her like this was quite satisfying.

Time for Marie to get her end, this has gone on way too long, time to move on. It’s getting boring....
Payback time. Waiting for chapters 321 onwards!...
I love the sarcastic comebacks. Quite amusing!...
