The Cross Estate.
When Marie and Hanley returned to the Cross estate, Mrs. Cross immediately rushed over, her voice tight with anxiety. "How did the selection for the gifted program go? Hanley was accepted, of course? Getting into the Helios Institute for Advanced Minds' junior division is such an honor."
Mrs. Cross was beaming. Marie had already told her that she’d managed to get the test questions in advance, so this was supposed to be a sure thing.
While Marie wasn't as doting as Natalie, Mrs. Cross had to admit she was certainly capable.
Seeing his grandmother's excited face, Hanley blurted out angrily, "Grandma, I didn't get in. It's all Mommy's fault."
Didn't get in?
For Mrs. Cross, it felt like the sky was falling.
She had already booked dozens of tables at a hotel to host a banquet for all their friends and relatives, to show off how brilliant her grandson was.
And now he wasn't accepted?
"Not... not accepted? What happened? Hanley, tell Grandma everything. What did that woman Natalie do?"
Hanley said furiously, "There was a jinx at the preschool today who stole my spot. She's a mute and was about to be kicked out, but Mommy just had to insist she could cure her! And... and then my spot was gone. Waaah!"
The more Hanley spoke, the more aggrieved he felt, and Mrs. Cross absolutely exploded.
Marie retorted, unconvinced, "Darren, why are you always defending Natalie now? Have you even considered Hanley's feelings?"
Marie was furious. Why was Darren always protecting Natalie now? Was he starting to care about her more and more?
"Consider his feelings?" Darren's gaze sharpened. He looked at his son. "Hanley, you're a boy. Attacking a little girl because she can't speak—do you think that's something a boy should do? You've embarrassed me!"
Darren's tone was harsh, and Hanley quickly hid behind Marie.
Marie looked flustered. "Hanley wasn't wrong. A mute shouldn't be in the gifted program in the first place. Didn't the representatives from the Helios Institute say so themselves? They wouldn't accept a mute. Hanley was just stating a fact. What's wrong with that?"
Seeing Marie defend him, Hanley peeked out from behind her. "Auntie's right, I didn't do anything wrong. Besides, Auntie said that to achieve great things, you can't get bogged down by details. You just have to be clear about your goal and do what it takes!"

Time for Marie to get her end, this has gone on way too long, time to move on. It’s getting boring....
Payback time. Waiting for chapters 321 onwards!...
I love the sarcastic comebacks. Quite amusing!...
