At Natalie's words, Victoria’s mocking smile froze on her face.
Her stillness betrayed her inner panic.
She never wanted to relive those days of being paralyzed.
"Just looking at you ruins my appetite. I'm done."
Victoria stormed away, leaving only Natalie and Hanley at the table.
"Mommy, you never used to talk back to Grandma like that. Are you in a bad mood?"
Natalie looked at her son. He was actually concerned about her feelings.
"I'm fine, sweetie. You don't need to worry."
"Mommy, is it because Auntie is so capable, and you can’t do anything, so you’re jealous? Does being jealous make you feel bad?"
Natalie’s eyes widened, a sense of unfamiliarity washing over her as she looked at her son.
"Mommy, you don't need to be jealous of Auntie. You'll never be able to match her achievements in the business world."
Sensing the shift in Natalie’s mood, Hanley continued, "But you have your good points, Mommy. Your cooking is much better than those so-called chefs.
"Why don't you just go back to how things were? Doing laundry, cooking, taking care of everyone. Wasn't that good enough?
"Why did you have to hire two chefs and make everyone uncomfortable? Look, Daddy, Auntie, and Grandma barely ate anything."
Natalie stared at her son. Darren had told her not to compete with Marie, and now her own son was telling her she could never measure up and should just go back to the kitchen.
"You only care if they've eaten well? Have you ever cared if your mommy is tired?"
"Mommy, why are you being so childish? Auntie and Daddy have to go out and work late. Don't you think they're tired?
"Mommy, everyone is working hard. How can you just give up? It’s like Grandma said, the Cross family doesn’t support freeloaders. If you keep being so negative, aren't you afraid Grandma and Daddy will abandon you?"
