She thought it was just bad luck, but she could never understand why her father had treated her that way.
He was a gambling addict, sure, but why did he have to force her to quit the Helios Institute?
She remembered when she was first accepted. All the neighbors, even the village chief, had come to congratulate them, saying a golden phoenix had risen from their humble town. They had even given her family a cash prize.
Her father had been ecstatic about the money. But soon after, he started causing endless trouble, demanding she withdraw. She held out for a year, but eventually, she couldn't fight him anymore and left the Institute with a heavy heart.
“Natalie, what’s wrong? You look upset.”
“Nothing, just thinking about the past.”
Lucas ran to a fruit bowl on the table, picked out a bright kumquat, and handed it to her.
“Natalie, the hard times are over. After the bitter, comes the sweet. Eat this, and forget all the unhappy things from before.”
Natalie took the fruit from Lucas, deeply moved. No one had ever cared about her feelings before, except for this five-year-old boy who wasn't even her own blood.
“Lucas, if you really want to get into the Helios Institute, I think I can help you.”
“Really? Thank you so much, Natalie! I’ll work really hard, I promise!”
He didn't show a hint of doubt or suspicion.
He’d heard how rigorous the Helios Institute's selection process was, so why did he believe so easily that she could help him?
“Lucas, you heard them. Getting into the Helios Institute is extremely difficult. Do you really trust me?”
“Of course I trust you! You’re Natalie. You’re the best.”
Marie said, “Mom, I’ve already looked into it. Natalie is working as a nanny for the Lockwood family, taking care of their mute daughter.”
“What? The Lockwoods have a mute daughter? I’ve never heard that before.”
“I only just found out myself. It’s not exactly something they’d advertise, so they’ve kept it very quiet. Natalie’s just a nanny there. She probably heard about the fight at the kindergarten and begged Terence to take her along.”
“That woman works fast. Kicked out of our family and she finds a new job just like that. I thought no one would hire her. But she’s just a nanny for the Lockwoods, yet look how smug she acts. She's definitely trying to seduce Terence.”
“Terence isn’t blind. Why would he be interested in a divorced nanny with a kid?”
“Some women are just born vixens. They have a knack for wrapping men around their little fingers. The way Terence was defending her, it doesn't look entirely innocent.”
As Victoria spoke, she suddenly clutched her chest, her brow furrowed. “Why have I been feeling so short of breath lately? It’s getting worse.”

Time for Marie to get her end, this has gone on way too long, time to move on. It’s getting boring....
Payback time. Waiting for chapters 321 onwards!...
I love the sarcastic comebacks. Quite amusing!...
