Marie's face fell. She had no intention of caring for a paralyzed mother-in-law. She was a Ward, after all.
Besides, why was he still calling her Marie?
After everything that had happened, even Hanley had publicly said he wanted her to be his new mommy.
Their past romance was now common knowledge. The TV drama she had funded was designed specifically to increase public acceptance of their relationship when the time was right.
Her plan had worked perfectly, so why wasn't he giving her a proper title?
He must still be under Natalie's influence. That woman was truly something else—forcing Darren into a divorce because she knew that what you can't have, and what you've lost, is always the most tempting.
She wouldn't let Natalie win. She was going to ruin her reputation completely.
…
As Natalie was leaving the Lockwood estate, she suddenly got a call from Darren.
What did he want?
Natalie didn't answer, simply hitting the decline button.
A moment later, a text message arrived.
[Mom collapsed. She said the medicine isn't working. Is there a problem with the prescription?]
Natalie scoffed. What kind of person did he think she was? To tamper with a prescription? She was a doctor; she had more integrity than that.
The herbs required were rare, and the market was flooded with cheap imitations. She used to personally source them to ensure their quality. Now, someone was likely being careless, buying whatever they could find and brewing it. Of course, it wouldn't be as effective.
But that was no longer her concern.
Natalie put her phone in her pocket. When Darren sent another message, he found he had been blocked.
Blocked? What did she mean by that?
Was it guilt or anger?
How dare she block him!
Darren was practically exploding with rage.
He made a call. “Find out where Natalie is right now.”
