Ring—
The bell above the glass door chimed, and a young waitress immediately rushed over with a bright smile.
"Welcome. Are you Miss Lexton?"
Vivienne nodded. Before she could speak, the waitress pointed toward the only occupied table in the entire shop. "Your party has been waiting for you for quite a while."
Following the girl's finger, Vivienne's eyes went wide. She stared in absolute disbelief.
Alaric?
She marched over, glancing around the empty room. "What are you doing here? And... are you drinking instant coffee out of a paper packet?"
Alaric's hand paused slightly before he set his cup down with flawless elegance. "Why can't I be here? Weren't you the one who demanded I keep an eye on you?"
"...When did I ever... Is that really what you thought I meant?"
The more she thought about it, the weirder the situation felt. She narrowed her eyes at the young man across from her. "Where is Julianne?"
Alaric gave her a casual glance. "She couldn't make it."
The sheer amount of horrifying implications packed into those four words left Vivienne reeling. She suddenly realized she knew absolutely nothing about how Alaric operated.
"What did you do?"
"Nothing much," he replied smoothly. "Just offered a mild warning."
In a dark, secluded alley, Wesley Crain slowly peeled off a pair of blood-soaked leather gloves. At his feet lay over a dozen men, groaning in agony.
Titus was on his knees in a puddle of muddy, blood-stained water, trembling violently, his eyes wide with stark terror.
Moments later, the heavy thud of combat boots echoed from the entrance of the alley. A squad of men in sharp black suits marched in.
"Help. Help me."
A sudden burst of desperate hope flared in Titus's eyes. He scrambled toward the men, clawing at the pavement. "I pay tribute every year. I beg for the Chapter Master's protection."
The Shadow Chamber had twelve chapters spread across Stormhollow, each governing a specific district. Local thugs usually paid heavy protection fees to ensure they wouldn't be wiped out. In areas controlled by The Shadow Chamber, unsanctioned gang warfare was strictly forbidden.
She had passed breathtaking sculptures, perfectly manicured exotic trees, and lavish pavilions. Just as she was reeling from the sheer, unimaginable wealth of the Blackthornes, she was informed that this was merely the outer gardens—the area designated for the maids to relax.
The burning excitement in Isolde's chest turned to ice. Hadn't Mina invited her to her birthday party? Why was she being led through the servant's quarters?
Was this just how ultra-wealthy families operated?
A gnawing anxiety settled in her stomach. Her pure anticipation was now laced with heavy dread.
Once she finally passed the outer courtyard, the scenery opened up into a sprawling lawn. Mina was standing by a towering stone lion statue, waiting for her.
Isolde nervously smoothed out her collar and jogged over, her eyes shining with hope.
"Miss Blackthorne, I saw this Kitten Cake at the bakery on the way here and thought it was so cute. I knew you'd love it. Thank you so much for inviting me. Happy birthday."
Mina's lips curled into a bright smile. Then, she raised her hand and slapped the cake straight onto the concrete.
The smile on Isolde's face shattered instantly. She stared in utter bewilderment. "Miss Blackthorne..."
