Alaric replied coolly, "I have some business to take care of in Merriton City. It's a bit complicated, so I won't be heading back to Stormhollow just yet. I'll probably be crashing here for a few days."
Vivienne stood by the fireplace, pretending to casually arrange the candles.
"We're family. It's no trouble at all. I have a spare room, so as long as you don't mind the setup, you're welcome to stay as long as you like."
Alaric nodded, his gaze sweeping lazily around the room. "So, what's with all the candles?"
Vivienne awkwardly stiffened, discreetly straining her ears to eavesdrop.
Cyril ignored the question. "Have you had dinner yet, Alaric?"
Alaric obviously wasn't stupid enough to mistake that for genuine concern. He kept his expression blank, waiting for the punchline.
"Vivienne was just begging me for a steak," Cyril said smoothly. "If you haven't eaten, you can join us."
Pfft.
Vivienne aggressively blew out another candle.
Cyril was blatantly spelling it out for Alaric—the candles were for a deeply romantic, highly intimate dinner date.
The worst part was that it was technically true, leaving Vivienne with absolutely zero grounds to argue.
Alaric showed no outward reaction. He just took a sip of his water and said, "I haven't eaten."
Standing in the background, Wesley rolled his eyes so hard it physically hurt. What did he mean he hadn't eaten? What did they just stuff their faces with two hours ago?
"Then you'll join us. I'll get everything ready. You two catch up," Cyril said, rising to his feet and heading straight for the kitchen.
Vivienne had been practically dying of curiosity. The second Cyril was out of earshot, she hopped onto the couch. "Alaric, what ended up happening with the Blackthorne family? And what about Mina? Did she go back?"
Alaric couldn't care less about the Blackthorne family or Mina right now. His icy stare drifted back to the obnoxious array of candles littering the coffee table.
Vivienne instantly panicked. "Moira lit these! The power went out, remember? We needed to see."
Right on cue.
Beep.
The entire apartment surged back to life. The sudden, blindingly bright overhead lights nearly burned Vivienne's retinas, and even Alaric winced slightly at the glare.
The ensuing silence was completely deafening.
A horrifying realization hit Vivienne, and she whipped her head toward the kitchen. That absolute bastard!
With the ridiculously provocative way Cyril had been acting, there was absolutely no way someone as sharp as Alaric didn't realize what was going on.
Even if they weren't blood-related, they were still technically family! Wasn't Alaric going to step in? Wasn't he going to rip Cyril to shreds over this?!
Instead of laying down the law, he was in there making juice?!
Was he completely out of his mind?!
In her past life, when the family patriarch had tried to force Alaric to marry her, his main argument was that she was basically his sister, and it was entirely inappropriate.
So why was he suddenly totally fine with it when it was Cyril crossing the line?
A bitter realization struck Vivienne, and she violently blew out the candle sitting in front of her.
Right. It was just because he didn't care about her at all.
...
Ten minutes later, the mouth-watering scent of sizzling steak drifted out from the kitchen.
Cyril walked out carrying perfectly plated steaks. He had already set three elegant porcelain plates and heavy silverware out on the long dining table. Alaric soon followed with the fresh strawberry juice. He practically never set foot in a kitchen and had clearly struggled with the blender, which explained the delay.
