The four girls chatted about everything under the sun, and before they knew it, evening had set in.
Mina glanced at the time and stood up to leave.
Since Vivienne couldn't move easily, Aurelia offered to walk Mina out. As soon as the two stepped outside the front gates of Obsidian Estate, they saw a long line of sleek black luxury cars idling in the driveway.
Matriarch Cavanaugh was helped out of her vehicle by her eldest son, Caelan. Cedric, who had been waiting by the gates, immediately went forward to greet them.
Right behind them was an unfamiliar, slightly overweight man in a sharp suit. He stepped out of the car with Lana Bellamy, his face plastered with an overly polite, eager smile.
Mina hadn't spent much time with the Blackthorne family in recent years, but she still recognized the Cavanaugh matriarch. She nudged Aurelia's arm. "I heard Grandma Cavanaugh was the one who actually organized the retreat at the mountain resort?"
Aurelia nodded and pulled Mina forward to say hello. "Grandma Cavanaugh, Mr. Cavanaugh."
The old woman beamed affectionately. "Aurelia, dear. You just keep getting prettier." She then turned her warm gaze to Mina. "Oh, Mina is here too."
The scandal surrounding the true and fake Blackthorne daughters had been massive news. Though no one spoke of it to her face, many in high society quietly looked down on Mina. The elite society mothers who had once fought to lock her down as a future daughter-in-law now avoided her like the plague.
But the matriarch's friendly demeanor didn't show a hint of that prejudice.
Mina nodded politely. "Grandma Cavanaugh. Mr. Cavanaugh."
Caelan nodded back. "Give my regards to your father."
The middle-aged man behind them blinked in surprise. Caelan Cavanaugh was the Judicial Oversight Council Speaker, yet he was speaking to this young girl with profound respect.
Noticing her father's confusion, Lana leaned in and whispered, "Her father is the head of the State Council."
Byron shot his daughter a glance, and the eager smile on his face grew even wider.
The Bellamy family was only allowed on the premises by clinging to the Cavanaughs' coattails. Without a formal introduction, it was inappropriate to interrupt, so Byron simply kept grinning enthusiastically.
Mina replied gracefully, "I will. It's getting late, so I should be going. Have a good evening."
