Matriarch Cavanaugh had simply wanted a clear stance from the Ravenshires. Sensing that Caspian wasn't in the mood for idle chit-chat, she tactfully wrapped up the conversation and rose to leave.
Byron was slightly disappointed the meeting was so brief, but he didn't dare let it show on his face. He knew his place perfectly well. In Westbay, he was a king, but in Stormhollow? Without the Cavanaughs paving the way, he wasn't even qualified to knock on the Ravenshires' front door.
As they stepped out of the Conservatory, the violent sound of sledgehammers slamming into stone grew even louder.
Looking at the floodlights and the chaotic flurry of construction workers, a sudden thought struck the matriarch. "Cedric, why haven't I seen Julian today?"
Usually, whenever she visited Obsidian Estate, Julian would personally wait by the gates to greet her, provided he was home.
"Julian was punished with a hundred lashes yesterday," Cedric replied calmly. "He is currently confined to the Ancestral Hall reflecting on his mistakes."
The guests all blanched, but the matriarch was visibly stricken. Her shock quickly morphed into deep anger.
"A hundred lashes? What on earth did Julian do to deserve such brutal treatment from the Master?"
"It wasn't just Julian. Mr. Cyril and Mr. Alaric received the exact same punishment," Cedric stated smoothly. "There is no need to worry, ma'am. The Master is always fair with his discipline. He hasn't wronged Julian."
"But—"
Caelan subtly tugged on his mother's sleeve. She shot her son an unhappy glare but wisely clamped her mouth shut.
Once outside the estate, Cedric personally helped the matriarch into her car.
