That afternoon, Cedric brought a group of neat, respectable-looking women to Vellmont Lodge. He wasn't foolish enough to directly appoint a new head maid. He simply explained that these were all veteran staff of the Estate and invited Vivienne to choose whoever caught her eye.
Still downcast over Marissa's departure, Vivienne picked at random. "Just those four. If I don't like them, I'll swap them out later."
She spoke with blatant arrogance. The four women exchanged glances, instantly realizing she would be a difficult boss. They kept their heads bowed, not daring to show any expression.
Cedric gave them a stern, routine lecture on the rules, while Vivienne casually handed them the notes Marissa had left behind. Gathering Little Stray into her arms, she retreated to her room.
That evening, Bianca Whitmore and Aurelia Ravenshire arrived unannounced.
Sitting by Vivienne's bed, both girls looked deeply troubled.
"Vivi, are you okay?" Bianca asked. "If you really can't bear to let Marissa go, why not beg Grandpa again? He spoils you; he'll definitely agree."
Vivienne shook her head. "No need. All good things must come to an end. People always have to part ways eventually."
Bianca's heart twisted. "Don't say that. I never want us to part ways."
Vivienne had only been lamenting the transient nature of human connections. Unprepared for Bianca to make it about them, she let out a soft laugh.
Aurelia, less driven by pure emotion, hesitated for a moment before asking softly, "Vivi, you let Marissa go on purpose, didn't you?"
The smile froze in Vivienne's eyes.
Seeing Vivienne's reaction, Bianca realized Aurelia was right and looked bewildered. "Wait, really? Why?"
She could tell Vivienne trusted Marissa deeply—perhaps even as much as she trusted either of them.
"Are you planning a counterattack?" Aurelia asked.
