Vivienne scoffed. "Like hell I care!"

There was no solid proof yet that Lana was involved in Julian's future death. If she ruined their budding romance by accident, it would be a disaster. The Bellamy family's power base was in Westbay; while they weren't as formidable as the Ravenshires, they were a stellar political match for Julian.

Julian's mood instantly soured again. "I should have known you were heartless."

Vivienne couldn't be bothered to argue. She eyed him critically. "So, spit it out. How did you actually end up in a hospital bed?"

Julian gave a careless, rebellious smirk. "My hand slipped. Tried to kill my old man, but he got the drop on me."

"I don't believe you," Vivienne said, her eyes narrowing. She wheeled closer to the bed, lowering her voice. "Tell me the truth. I swear I won't tell Grandpa."

She leaned in, the soft hospital lighting catching the delicate curve of her ear and illuminating her loose bangs.

Julian glanced at her, then quickly looked away. He pressed his hand against the back of her head, gently but firmly pushing her back to a safe distance. "Nothing to tell."

Vivienne frowned, swatting his hand away. "Fine. Keep your secrets. I'm leaving."

"You just got here," Julian complained, clearly irritated.

Vivienne turned her wheelchair toward the door, throwing a petty remark over her shoulder. "Well, I certainly haven't been here as long as Miss Bellamy."

Before Julian could formulate a comeback, the sound of footsteps echoed in the hallway, followed by Leander's voice.

"Is Caspian inside?"

Julian's eyes darkened instantly. He leaned back against his pillows, perfectly schooling his expression.

Jasper was standing guard at the door. Leander assumed Caspian was visiting, so without waiting for Jasper to announce him, he pushed the door open. Seeing Vivienne inside instead, Leander's polite smile froze, turning painfully stiff.
