September arrived, and the late summer heat began to fade.
Vivienne leaned against the windowsill, casually watering the roses while gazing at the empty courtyard across the way. University was about to start; the three idiots should be coming back soon.
"Vivi!"
Just as the thought crossed her mind, Bianca and Aurelia came sprinting toward her from the courtyard entrance, waving frantically. "Bad news! Something terrible happened!"
Vivienne frowned, leaning out the window. "What's wrong?"
Aurelia grabbed Bianca's arm. "Let's go inside."
Inside the room, the four housekeepers were busy packing Vivienne's luggage. Vivienne turned around and waved a hand. "Can you guys give us a minute?"
The women immediately stood up. "Of course, Miss. Just call if you need anything."
Before Vivienne could even reply, Bianca burst through the door like a hurricane. "Vivi, it's an absolute disaster."
The housekeepers slipped out, and Aurelia carefully pushed the door shut behind them.
Vivienne hopped off the windowsill. "Spill it. What happened?"
"Alaric and Cyril are missing!"
Vivienne's brow furrowed. "How is that even possible?"
"We just got word from the 313th Division," Aurelia said, her voice shaking. "Their convoy crossed the border and got into a firefight with a local warlord. Alaric responded to their distress signal, went in for backup, and hasn't been heard from since."
"How did that happen?"
Vivienne was completely thrown off. Alaric was only supposed to be observing the 313th Division, not officially enlisted. There was no way he should have been allowed on an active, high-risk combat mission.
Aurelia shook her head, terrified. "Ularia is a total warzone right now. There's zero law and order. The locals hate Athelvia because we refuse to take in their refugees. Who knows what kind of danger Alaric is in?"
