Mid-September. The summer heat lingered, and the beaches of Merriton City were still packed with crowds.
Vivienne Lexton sat by the floor-to-ceiling window, holding up a paintbrush to measure the scenery outside.
Mrs. Gable walked over with a glass of milk. She glanced at the canvas and froze.
Outside the window, the port was bathed in beautiful weather. The bustling crowds and passing ships painted a picture of a prosperous, noisy city.
But on Vivienne's canvas, black clouds loomed over the port. Giant waves capsized the ships, and the onlookers on the pier were still cheering wildly, completely unaware that the seawater had already risen to their feet.
The entire painting was dominated by heavy, dark gray tones, exuding a suffocating wave of destruction.
Seeing Mrs. Gable staring intently, Vivienne smiled and took the milk. Her tone was light. "What do you think of my painting?"
Mrs. Gable smiled sheepishly. "Miss Lexton, I don't know much about art. I really can't tell."
Vivienne shook her head. "It's not about art. The true value of a painting is the sensory experience it gives people. Just tell me how it makes you feel."
Mrs. Gable looked troubled. "I... I really can't feel anything."
Vivienne raised an eyebrow and took a sip of her milk. After one swallow, she looked up and asked with total seriousness, "Did you poison the milk?"
Mrs. Gable's face drained of color. "Miss... I..."
Before she could stumble through an explanation, Vivienne broke into a smile. "I'm just joking. Humor is a form of art too. Don't worry about it. Go ahead and do your thing."
Mrs. Gable let out a long sigh of relief. "Then... I'll go prepare dinner."
"Okay."
Mrs. Gable walked toward the kitchen with a lingering sense of dread. Suddenly remembering something, she turned back to look at the window.
