Crown Hospital.
"Hahahahaha!"
Kael's maniacal laughter echoed hauntingly down the hallway.
"It's been half a month and those two idiots still haven't reported to school?! Hahaha! Are they actually dead?"
Kael leaned heavily on his crutches. Ignoring the cast still plastered on his leg, he hopped excitedly over to the couch. "Preston, aren't you thrilled? With Alaric and Cyril dead, who else in Stormhollow would dare go against us?"
Preston's expression remained passive. "What makes you think they're dead?"
"Ularia has been causing trouble on the border for years, but when have they ever actually exchanged fire?" Kael retorted. "Without a massive inciting incident, who would dare start shooting? The only way it makes sense is if Alaric really is dead."
Josslyn rolled his eyes. "Give it a rest. The chances of Alaric dying are lower than the chances of you liking men. Is your concussion still acting up?"
Kael's face immediately darkened. Were they never going to let the concussion joke go? He turned to Preston. "Tell me, doesn't what I said make sense?"
Preston kept his head down, continuously refreshing his phone for news out of Merriton City.
When he left the house that morning, his family had already seen off three or four waves of important guests, including President Adrian Markell and a high-ranking military commander. For these figures to show up at the same time, something massive had to have happened at the border.
"Preston, why aren't you saying anything?"
