Chapter 134
Caleb’s POV
It was all worth it.
Her smile, the flush on her cheeks when she saw what we had prepared for her. It was Sabrina who hastily whispered to me this morning as we left the pack clinic, that Daria’s birthday had passed the day before. It sent a jolt down my spine.
We had to do something to celebrate her.
And with Eric Nolan’s and Sabrina’s help, we got everything together. While Master Killian, myself and Jacob waded through the work before us – setting the region to rights and reaffirming the treaty of alliance between all packs in the region – Sabrina and Eric handled catering, decor and even managed to help procure exquisite gifts for my mate.
She was truly loved, but perhaps I had been lax in showing her all this while. So I embraced it.
After enough dancing with Sabrina, both of them showing excitement at being pregnant at the same time, and speaking at length with Eric Nolan and Killian – who gave her the gift of a dagger with an intricately designed hilt and embroidered sheath (‘to keep you safe no matter where you go’, Killian had said to which Eric had unhelpfully added ‘Now you can sneak off anywhere without worrying us so much.) – Daria finally settled on the couch beside me, exhaling with a smile.
“Thank you,” she softly said. “I guess I forgot about my own birthday this time…. ha,” she chuckled, leaning against my shoulder lazily. I wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her closer, a smirk on my lips. “I wish every birthday was like this.”
“As you wish, it shall be done, love,” I replied in a low voice, watching our friends and family move about, enjoying the veritable feast before them. The music played along in the background, and the admittedly lovely decor- the candles were a nice touch, I thought absently – painted a romantic ambience. Sabrina and Jacob danced once or twice whenever a song they liked came on, while Eric and Killian sat shoulder to shoulder murmuring to each other, with soft smiles playing on their lips.
Slowly I stood, knowing the time was right.
I took Daria’s hand, and she looked mildly confused as I led her out towards the garden. The music drifted through the passageway as we walked, side by side.
The lawn was neatly trimmed, well kept by the groundskeepers and gardeners, and I pulled her onto the stone path that led deeper into the garden.
Then once we came upon the fountain at the center of the lush garden, I stopped, and she turned to me in confusion.
“What’s going on?” She asked softly.
“I have not yet given you my gift, love,” I said, my lips curled into a smirk.
But then she shook her head.
“You don’t have to give me anything more, Caleb. What you’ve given me… this party, everything? It’s enough,” she insisted.
I decided now was as good a time as any to act.
And so, I got down on one knee.
Immediately, she shut up, her lips shutting with a click, stumbling back in shock.
“W-What’s this?”her voice trembled a little, her eyes fixed on mine.
In the dim lighting, despite everything that had happened, she appeared untouched by pain, by the past trauma and trials. she had undergone. The wind rustled her hair, and her blue eyes shone like sapphire stars.
“This is me doing something I should have done a long time ago I stated, pulling out a ring.
It was one of my most important tasks of the day. I had spent over three hours at the jewelers, waiting for the finished product on a rush order I had made over two weeks ago, right before the whole mess with Felicia caused chaos between us. “It has been too long, and I regret not doing it sooner. This is me saying that..” I paused. I hadn’t prepared a speech or anything at all, simply envisioned things running smoothly. I couldnt fuck this up. So I decided to go with brutal, open, unelegant honesty. “…that I love you, Daria. That I want to spend the rest of my life with you, no matter what. I know that we have had our ups and downs… but I cannot imagine my life without you. The Goddess knew what she was doing when she bound us together, and I was a fool for not seeing that sooner.”
Daria shook her head repeatedly, covering her face in her hands.
“Please, Caleb, don’t,” I could hear her sniffling. “This is- this is too much. Oh Goddess,” she wiped a falling tear, blinking rapidly. “I didn’t expect this.” she laughed nervously. “What do I do? What should I say?”
“Anything. Everything. Whatever you say, I will accept it.”
For a long fucking time she didnt say anything, and i began to feel a sense of dread creeping in… until she fell to her knees and wrapped her arms around me.
“Yes, I will stay by your side,” She declared, tears rolling down her cheeks. “I will. I will forever and always, I will.”
Her words were like a judgement I wasn’t aware I needed passed until it was. I pulled her up, lifting her up in my arms and twirling her around.
This time, my joy knew no bounds.
