Chapter 138
Eric’s POV
Ten years later
“Hmm. “I breathed, my mind snapping back to reality. It was morning, right at the crack of dawn, as always. I turned to my other side, sighing at the incredible warmth of the duvet covers
It was another day, I thought, eventually sitting up.
Beside me, my mate stirred, and opened his eyes to look at me as I exited the bed, my feet padding across the hardwood floor towards the bathroom to wash up.
I washed my face, switching off the tap with my eyes closed and reaching my hand out to the towel rack to pick up a warm face towel
Instead my hand touched the bare metal rod and I opened my eyes, glancing at the laundry basket with a wry smile.
Sighing again. I left the bathroom, nearly bumping into my mate
“Morning,” I greeted, as he pulled me into a firm kiss. His eyes were fixed on the damp strands of hair that fell over my eyes, and his hand moved up to tuck it behind my ears.
His scent was quite something. I leaned into his touch, my thoughts of leaving the bedroom instantly forgotten.
A knock interrupted whatever else was going to happen. I refrained from groaning as Killian backed away.
“Come in,” he called out.
The door suddenly swung open and they rushed in.
“Dad: Papa! We’re going to be late!” It was the delightful squeal of Adelaide.
She was 8 years of age, and the daughter of a fallen Crimson pack warrior. After her mother died in childbirth Killian had taken her in, and somehow, she became ours.
Beside her Travis nodded eagerly. His golden brown hair and caramel colored skin stood out among our family of four, but he wasn’t any less lovable. The seven-year old boy was easily excitable, and the two of them clung to Killian’s legs, waiting for him to pick them up as he always did.
And he obliged them once again, picking our children up each with one arm, without even a hint of hesitation or strain.
Despite being on the cusp of 60, Killian still stood out as a great warrior, and he still kept up with training in a way that rivalled the strongest warriors in their prime. I still found it difficult to spar with him.
Admiring the sparse grey hair that stood out on his head among the black, I watched the pups squirm in their Father’s arms with a smirk on my face.
Eventually I had to point out, clearing my throat to catch the attention of my family.
“You know the longer we wait, the longer the trip will take,” I smirked as Adelaide flailed in response, her doe-eyes full of determination.
“Gotta go! We gotta go, papa!” She pouted at Killian whose expression didn’t change one bit.
Even after a decade and some years with him, Killian looked ever more handsome, and stoic.
Only, most people didn’t know how truly emotional he could get I had learnt that over time. The more stoic and unreadable his expression was, the more he truly cared.
After sending for the live-in governess to get Adelaide and Travis ready, I shut the door with a huff of relief. Sometimes it was difficult to handle two young children, but we made it work
“Jealous?” Killian’s voice took on a teasing tone behind me. His arms wrapped around my waist firmly, and I shut my eyes briefly at the contact.
Goddess, give me strength.
“Only that I can’t pick them up like that. They’re getting heavy, aren’t they, old man?” I remarked half-sarcastically, nudging him with my elbow with a smirk on my face.
I could see his lips twitch as I turned my head to look at him.
I had taken to calling him that once I saw his grey hairs winning the battle for territory on his head.
He never failed to smile at it.
Eventually I managed to get my ass into gear and took the longest shower I’d had in a while. After all, the trip to the Wisteria Pack was going to be long and more than a little exhausting.
But it was a tradition we’d come to love, taking the trip every three months with the entire family to spend a holiday there.
When we set out it was already 8 in the morning.
By the time we got to the borders of the Wisteria Pack, it was nearly 3 in the afternoon.
The guards at the gate recognized us, and let us in without too many questions.
The security in the Wisteria Pack was the best throughout the region, and it wasn’t simply because of the size of the pack. As much as I had once hated to admit it, Alpha Caleb truly was a force to reckon with.
Forging a region-wide alliance with packs of different factions was unheard of until over a decade ago. Now, everyone that played a major role in the Thousand-Wolves Battle (as historians named it for some damn reason) were regarded as war heroes. And at the top of the list? Alpha Caleb and his Luna, Daria.
We entered the pack compound seamlessly, with several pack members staring at us, not because we were strangers, but because of our… celebrity status.
“Uncle Ric!”
Talia rushed towards us, her hair flowing in the wind. She jumped up into my arms, and I grunted at the weight.
Wow, the pups really do grow up fast, I thought.
“Easy there, pup.” I chuckled at her enthusiasm. She definitely had a favorite, I thought with a smirk towards Killian’s amused stare.
I had to admit, when Daria and Caleb had announced their decision to take in the baby girl that screwball Felicia had given birth to, I had thought they were making a mistake. Of course I shut my damn mouth and supported them, as family was meant to. But the more Talia grew, she grew on me, and there was no one else I would regard as my beloved first niece.
“You’re here just in time for the festival tomorrow!” She said as dropped her gently onto the ground, her golden eyes glistening with joy. “It’s gonna be great!”
“Of course,” I said, tugging her towards the door of the mansion A few parts looked stranger than the last time I visited, and I nodded in approval, looking at the renovated foyer that was much wider than before.
I snorted, thinking of just how apt the timing was.
“Turns out the pups will share a birthday as well,” I couldn’t help but muse aloud in delight, looking down at the baby Adrien. It was the name of Ethan’s and my grandfather, someone I had never known. Somehow, it felt far more fitting than any other ideas Caleb and I personally came up with.
“Hmm.” Caleb hummed, gently reaching to take Adrien from my arms. Our newborn baby had fallen asleep now, and Caleb looked down at him with love in his eyes. After some time he gently placed Adrien into his cot, and turned to me as the maid rushed to take out the laundry.
“Get some rest. I’ll see to some things,” he said, before leaving the room, keeping his thoughts and spoken words vague. I raised a brow at it, confused but exhausted.
After I managed to get myself a warm bath, I checked on Adrien again before laying back on my bed to rest. My sleep was peaceful, but otherwise empty of Caleb’s thoughts and presence
When I woke, it was to the voices of the two people I didn’t expect.
“E-Eric?” My eyes went wide as I took in his smirking face, and beside him, stood Master Killian. They both looked at ease, sitting by my bedside. “How did you get here so fast? Weren’t you at the Crimson Pack?”
Eric and I saw each other once a month, as he traveled back and forth to check up on me, under the guise of playing delegate on behalf of his pack. We wrote letters to each other twice as often, ensuring that we didn’t miss a thing in each other’s lives.
But this… was still unexpected.
“Congratulations, cousin,” he chuckled, patting my head gently.” see Alpha Caleb managed to keep that secret from you.”
What?
“Actually,” Caleb snorted at Eric’s wording. “It was your idea after all. Not mine.” At my confused expression, he added, “Eric wanted to stay close by when you gave birth. He’s been on assignment at our borders since a week ago.”
That… explained it.
Warmth filled my body, and I squeezed Eric’s hands with gratitude in my eyes.
“Thank you,” I said, my voice low and quiet. “And you as well, master Killian.”
“It was no big deal,” Eric shrugged, but the grin on his lips widened like he’d just won the lottery.
“It’s just as well, considering the Beta’s family has also been blessed with twins.” Killian added.
The news was a shock to my system.
I was speechless for far too long before I finally found my voice
“Sabrina gave birth to twins?!”
I was overjoyed, for both myself and her.
A week later, we had the official naming ceremonies for Adrien and Sabrina’s twins – a boy and a girl, Jeremiah and Ellie respectively.
Later, Sabrina would insist that she was done having children.
I agreed inwardly, thinking to myself that Talia and Adrien were going to be a handful to deal with. When I told Caleb this he laughed and kissed me playfully.
*As long as we have each other, there’s nothing too much to handle, he told me.
And that, was exactly what I needed.
