Chapter 135
Daria’s POV
Two weeks later:
“Well, that’s everything,” I mumbled beside Sabrina as we watched the florist and tailors scurry back to their shops in haste. The mating ceremony – a joint celebration – threatened to be one of the most exquisite ones in history. The rush of planning, decor, catering, dresses, picking out various gifts for the delegates while STILL making time out to rest for the sake of our pregnancies was… utterly draining.
“Thank the Goddess I don’t have to do this all alone,” Sabrina groaned. “I don’t think I’m made for such work. Next time I’ll simply leave the planning to you.”
“Next time?” I raised a neat brow as we returned into the mansion, moving to sit by the patio to continue enjoying the sunshine and finger foods delivered by the maids in trays.
“You know what I mean,” She groaned. “The babies will have birthdays, you know. And there would be a lot more parties and anniversaries to plan for, since you’re Luna and all.”
“And you’re the Beta,” I pointed out.
“Acting Beta,” She grumbled, folding her arms and scowling at the reminder. Jacob had been incredibly busy these past couple of days – not only handling pack matters within his jurisdiction, but had been unavoidably absent from the pack due to numerous delegate missions through the region Due to this, he had foreseen his inability to handle it all, and pleaded to Caleb to make official a new post for his beloved, most trusted mate.
“Considering it’s the first time in history that two people have occupied the Beta position at the same time…” I smiled and shrugged. She rubbed at her waist, rolling her eyes. The pregnancy symptoms were affecting her a lot more than it was me for the time being, and I felt a little sorry for her.
“Well, whatever. He should return to the pack before our wedding is all I’m saying,” Sabrina mumbled, shoving a sandwich into her mouth and chewing as elegantly as she could manage. Laughter bubbled up in my chest but I stifled it, covering my mouth in response.
“How is Elder Gerome?” I changed the subject, wanting to distract her from the thought of not having her mate near. Silently, I appreciated Caleb for keeping his trips outside the pack to a minimum. Although… I mused while gazing down at the white-gold Celtic knot ring that he had proposed to me with it likely had to do more with the fact that the pack doctor had emphasized my vulnerable state. As I had a miscarriage before, we had to be extremely careful to reduce my stress levels and monitor my pregnancy at the first and second trimester with care.
Caleb had taken it up a notch though. I grumbled inwardly, thinking of the last time I wished to take a stroll through the farmer’s market only to be forced to take not one,
one, not two, not even a neat three, but SIX guards along. At that point wasn’t that simply overkill? Everyone in the market had given me a wide berth, and even when I reached for the best fried dough snacks, the seller told me sheepishly that “The Alpha had made it clear’ that I was monitoring my diet due to ‘medical reasons. By the Goddess!
I nearly tore him a new one that night, but of course, he had known I was upset and knew to distract me.
“…waiting game. Daria, are you listening?” Sabrina’s voice suddenly rose in volume and I was hurled out of my thoughts with extreme speed.
My cheeks flushed as shame and embarrassment overtook me. Clancing at my best friend i made to apologize when she raised her hand and huffed, stopping me,
“You’re thinking of Alpha Caleb again, aren’t you?” she asked pointedly and I lowered my head, almost like she had just scolded me.
“Sorry,” I apologized quickly. “What were you saying?”
She appraised me for a bit with a knowing look in her eyes and then said, “Elder Gerome has fallen ill again, actually. I thought to ask you to look over him. He has caught a chill since wo nights ago. But… he didn’t want me to tell anyone. So for now, we’re just playing the waiting game.”
I felt alarm and panic creeping up in my chest.
Softly I placed my hand over Sabrina’s, speaking, “You don’t have to worry. I’ll come over tonight to check on him.”
