Chapter 136
Caleb’s POV
The morning of my mating ceremony to Daria, I woke up early
The entire pack was in a festive mood. With the Alpha and Beta of the pack getting married at the same time, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind.
Silently I unbuttoned my shirt and I reached out to Daria through the mind-link.
‘Awake yet?’ I asked as gently as I could. I had noticed that the more I used the telepathic link we shared, the stronger it became. At first, we could only sense each other’s emotions vaguely during some moments. Now, it was a constant presence, every faint thread of emotion within my mate was telegraphed to me with utmost precision. I wondered once if she found this overwhelming but she only shrugged and smiled saying it was good and made her feel less alone.
Then, one night, I found myself slipping into her dreams when we drifted off to sleep.
That was one particularly emotional night, one where she had been caught in the throes of a nightmare.
Until then I had never known what she had been through in the Red Vale pack with Jamal. Seeing her like that had been horrifying, and even though a part of me was aware it was simply a dream, it didn’t make it any easier.
That was the night I understood why she made that statement about feeling less alone.
Eventually I pulled her out of that haze of pain and she woke up exactly the same second that I had.
After that, every now and then, we would find ourselves wandering in each other’s dream worlds. Sometimes she still had nightmares, about everything from Jamal to Felicia to even the loss of our first child, but each time I would pull her out of it. I wasn’t about to let her get through that pain ever again, and this time I’d make sure she wasn’t alone.
I felt a stir in my mind, but it was muted, and I raised my brows, while putting on the cufflinks to my dress shirt.
“I hear it’s bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the ceremony, Caleb,” her voice came through my head, and I smiled.
‘That’s why you’re blocking me? I think that’s very upright of you I replied almost immediately, teasing her.
She huffed, and that alone made me smile wider. She must have caught my amusement exactly because I heard some laughter before a pause.
‘I have to go,’ she said obsequiously after a few seconds had passed. Elder Gerome’s leg is acting up again.
Even during our ceremony, Daria couldn’t help but worry about him. I was glad to find that she and Sabrina had become rather fond of Jacob’s Grandfather as I was. The news of Elder Gerome’s chronic illness was painful to say the least. Jacob hadn’t reacted well, but we supported him through it. Daria, as always, kept things vague whenever I asked about how Elder Gerome’s health was, but I knew it was her way of protecting all of us.
A faint ache built up in my heart.
At the very least, I considered myself, he would live to see our mating ceremony, possibly the birth of our children as well.
That was all that mattered.
I finished getting ready only for me to nearly bump into Callum my chief guard at the doorway. He bowed deeply, greeting with utmost respect.
“Rise, Callum,” I gestured with a sigh. “I assume that woman is misbehaving again?”
Callum nodded.
“She insists on seeing you this time. She says it is urgent,” he replied, although his tone of disbelief was obvious. Just like me, he had gotten used to her trying new ways to get her way and he wasn’t at all buying her bullshit. However I HAD ordered him to report anything she does or says to me, so he was under obligation to do so.
“Whatever she has to say, I will not sully the day of my wedding for her. She can wait,” I said brusquely and he nodded in response. “Have the pack doctor sent to check on her. Her due date must be anytime now.”
“Yes Alpha,” Callum bowed and turned to leave to do as I had asked.
Straightening and rolling my shoulders back, I walked down to the foyer to greet the guests. The entire regional packs were here, represented by a few delegates in every way, shape and form. Gifts sent by packs from other regions had begun to arrive as well, despite the short notice and long distance it took to send out invitations.
Right now, the Wisteria Pack was the most powerful in the region. Most of the territories and civilians that belonged to the Red Vale Pack were now ours, with a few exceptions. Alpha Townsend and other neighboring Pack Alphas had also gotten their share of the spoils, increasing the might of their packs tenfold.
Therefore, in a way, this mating ceremony was slated to be one of the grandest ever in the history of the region. No expense was spared in ensuring the event was an enjoyable one for the guests and members of the pack.
Soon after greeting delegates from the Green Pack, the head maid came to inform me that it was time to begin the ceremony – the most important part.
I walked to stand at the top of the aisle with anticipation. Jacob was already there and bowed to me.
“Well, I had thought this day might never come,” Jacob spoke up beside me as the orchestra began to play. I looked out over the sea of guests. Master Killian and Eric Nolan were notably seated in the front as guests of honor and family. Elder Gerome was also there, a look of unmistakable pride on his face
