Chapter 137
Daria’s POV
Six months later:
I scowled at the nanny I had just finished berating, my gaze cold as ice.
Caleb looked from me to her, his eyes narrowed as he held Talia to his chest. She had been wailing until about a minute ago.
“Your services are no longer needed,” I growled at the older woman who paled considerably before turning to look at Caleb, as a desperate hope showed in her eyes.
“Alpha,” She fell to her knees, hands clutching tightly at her robes. “Please, have mercy.”
Caleb appeared calm outwardly, but I could see his every emotion – he was brimming with hatred and fury.
Coldly, he stated, “You tried to harm my child, and you believe I should show you mercy? You are lucky that Luna is the one handling this and not I, or you and your family would be destroyed.”
I called for the guards to immediately send her away, and she was loudly sobbing as she left. Once her cries had faded enough into the distance I stood, waddling over to Caleb to take Talia in my arms. Her amber eyes blinked at me, before she let out a cute giggle.
“It seems we cannot trust people to behave now,” I mused aloud, my anger still brimming underneath.
“They think they’re doing us a favour. After all, most of the pack knows who her blood mother is,” Caleb replied with a sigh, guiding me gently to sit back on the sofa. “You know how long it took for us to even convince the Elders to acknowledge her officially as ours. It would take the rest of the pack even longer.”
I smiled wanly; Of course, people knew who Felicia was and what crimes she had committed. It was impossible to hide it, everyone knew that she had given birth and had been executed only a week after.
That someone I trusted to look after my child, though, would carry out a vendetta she had no right to… that was unforgivable.
“That woman and her family should be sent out of the pack,” I declared hotly, playing with my daughter’s lovely curled hair.
“The nerve!”
“I’ll look into other suitable people who can care for Talia.” Caleb offered, sitting by my side.
He too, understood the reasons behind what had just occurred. In fact, it was only our close friends and family that had truly accepted Talia as our own.
Just as we were about to brainstorm who we could hire – usually a branch member from a noble family were the ones traditionally hired to care for children of the Alpha’s family in lieu of our own family members – I heard the rush of footsteps stomping on the ground.
“Where’s my little baby goddaughter?” I heard Sabrina’s voice echo through the foyer, slightly out of breath. As soon as she entered the living room, I could see the worry in her eyes.
“News travels fast,” I remarked. “How did you hear about it?”
“You know,” Her eyes darkened as she growled. “That woman should be ashamed of herself. Poisoning a child?!”
Jacob emerged from behind, patting his mate on the shoulder and trying to support her. Just like me, her belly was round and she was about ready to deliver.
“Calm down, babe,” He soothed, “The Goddess was on our side today. At least Daria was able to intercept it before Talia drank it.” Despite his words I too noticed the way his eyes flickered over to Talia in my arms.
Thinking of how my gut instinct saved my baby girl today, I decided I would never overthink acting on them ever again. If not for my skills as a healer I wouldn’t have caught the faint scent of poison meant to lull the victim into a dreamless, deep sleep, thus ending their life. And it was right in her feeding bottle!
Looking at Brina’s fuming expression, my brows furrowed.
“Honestly though, how did you find out so quickly?” I wondered aloud, before seeing the knowing smiles on their faces. Shaking my head, I decided it wasn’t worth finding out, and turned to Caleb. “We do have to find someone to care for her soon.”
“Actually,” Sabrina cut in. ” I have someone who would do the trick.” Then she turned and gestured for someone to approach.
My eyes widened a fraction as I recognized the girl that stepped forward.
“Carla?” I remembered her from when Demi had tried to use her as a scapegoat. Thinking back to those times I saw her smile and bow deeply out of respect.
“She insisted on returning,” Sabrina said, her smile blinding. “Said she had to repay you for saving her life back then.”
“I can learn fast, Luna,” Carla stepped forward looking nervous. And I have experience in taking care of young children. I won’t disappoint you.”
Approval shone in Caleb’s eyes.
‘I think she can handle it,’ he said through the mind-link. ‘She has respect for you.’
I nodded slowly, not showing any emotion at first but then I reached my hand out and gestured for her to come forward. Then I handed Talia over to her and said, “You can start today, then.”
The joy in Clara’s eyes was unimaginable. I never expected someone would willingly want to work taking care of my baby girl, due to Felicia’s reputation.
