Hearing the screech of the brakes behind her, Vanessa merely tossed a cold glance over her shoulder.
Seeing her look back, a surge of wild hope flared in Lucas's chest. But before that joy could even register, the woman turned away and strode off without a second glance.
The very last flicker of light in his eyes instantly died.
As if entirely deaf to Quentin's voice, Lucas scrambled off the ground like a broken man and stumbled toward his own car.
On the other side, the moment Vanessa stepped out of the elevator, her phone started ringing.
The second she answered, Chloe's furious shrieks assaulted her ear.
"Vanessa, if you already left, why the hell did you come back? Couldn't you just stay away!"
The moment Chloe arrived at the office, she discovered Lucas had flown right back to Sterling City at dawn.
Recalling how Lucas had completely lost his mind at the tech summit just over a fleeting glimpse of Vanessa's back, she was absolutely certain Vanessa was intentionally throwing herself in his path.
Vanessa's tone was completely detached, devoid of any emotion. "Chloe, what kind of psychotic break are you having this time?"
"Luke is the CEO of Vortex, but now he's struggling at every turn, completely crippled by your actions! You already broke up with him, why won't you just let him go?"
"I helped him build Vortex from the ground up. Taking my rightful share was merely claiming what belonged to me."
"You didn't have to sell it to Titan Holdings!"
"I sell to the highest bidder. Who in their right mind turns down cash?" Vanessa let out a soft, mocking laugh. "Lucas always bragged that you were his most capable assistant. Secretary Quinn, surely you're not just here for the good times and terrified of a little hardship?"
"You did this on purpose!" Chloe's voice trembled with absolute rage. "Luke built Vortex with his own two hands! What right does a washed-up housewife who only knows how to cook have to touch it? You were just a glorified maid who served him for three years. You deserved a few thousand bucks in wages at most! What gives you the right to take half his company?"
"I have no obligation to explain myself to you. Since Secretary Quinn is currently blessed with child, you should spend your energy figuring out how to secure that wedding ring."
That single line viciously stomped on Chloe's deepest insecurity.
Listening to the dial tone, her face twisted in pure, unadulterated fury. She was trembling so hard she could barely hold her phone.
