Elaine Grant stood in the mall, listening to Eleanor Howard's harsh accusations over the phone. A brief wave of panic hit her, but she quickly composed herself.
"Mrs. Howard, what's wrong?" she asked with an accommodating smile.
"Even if Vanessa isn't your biological daughter, as her stepmother, you shouldn't go around ruining a girl's reputation."
"I only spoke the truth. Didn't you send someone to verify it yourself? How about we meet tonight? I'd love for you to meet my daughter, Giselle."
As long as Eleanor agreed to meet Giselle, she was bound to like her.
"There's no need. Don't call me again."
With that, Eleanor hung up.
Listening to the dial tone, Elaine lost all her enthusiasm for shopping.
She turned around and headed straight to Giselle's office.
Seeing her mother return empty-handed, Giselle frowned in confusion. "Mom, didn't you go buy me a dress for tonight?"
"There was a slight complication."
Elaine's expression darkened as she briefly recounted the phone call.
Giselle's brows furrowed instantly. "Mom, you only told the truth. Even if Eleanor's attitude has changed, we absolutely cannot give up. We can't let Vanessa join the Howard family that easily."
Once Vanessa became Mrs. Howard, she would forever have the upper hand.
They had been competing for over a decade, and Giselle refused to let Vanessa live a better life than her.
Elaine fell silent for a moment, a cold glint flashing in her eyes.
"You're right. We'll stick to the plan for tonight. We'll expose her past in public and let Mr. Howard see her true colors."
Giselle couldn't hold back a triumphant smirk.
She was already picturing the scene: Vanessa's scandalous past revealed in front of the Howards, her reputation in tatters, forced to break off the engagement.
Elite families valued reputation above all else. They only married women with spotless backgrounds.
Giselle knew she wasn't as stunningly beautiful as Vanessa, but she was untouched, saving herself for marriage.
On that point alone, Vanessa could never compete with her.
