Chapter 56 Miss Russell Got Beaten
Ruby rushed over. The second she saw Charlotte’s gown with a snapped strap, she
didn’t waste a word-she grabbed Charlotte and dragged her straight toward the
restroom.
“Put on my dress and go in.”
Charlotte froze. “Then what about you?”
Ruby’s tone was flat, impatient. “I was forced to come. They said it was some gala, but really my grandpa brought me here to see if there’s any guy I like. Like I care. I’ll put on
your dress and go straight home.”
Charlotte hesitated.
Ruby cut her off. “Don’t. If you don’t go in, Matthew is definitely going to be pissed. At a
time like this, you have to stroke him the right way. Don’t forget-your goal is revenge.”
Gratitude tightened in Charlotte’s chost “Thank you Duby!!
“Save it. Hurry up.”

They changed fast in the restroom.
Luckily, they were about the same build, so the dresses didn’t look awkward on either of
them.
Ruby asked, “What about that girl?”
“Let her stay in there and think about what she did. Ignore her. Someone will let her out
later.”
“Fine.”
They walked out together, only to run into Gordon again at the banquet hall entrance.
He took one look at what they were wearing and laughed. “You two playing musical
dresses?”
Then he realized Ruby’s strap had snapped.
To keep from flashing anyone, Ruby was pressing a hand to her chest the whole time.

This time, Gordon didn’t joke. He decisively stripped off his suit jacket and draped it over Ruby.
Charlotte still looked uneasy. “Ruby…”
Gordon guessed what she was about to say.
“Go in. I’ll take her home.”
Ruby snapped, “I drove. Why would I need you to take me? You both go in.”
Gordon just tugged her away. As he walked, he said, “I didn’t drive. Perfect-let me
borrow your car. And anyway, I need my jacket back. It’s limited edition.”
Gordon didn’t always play by the rules, but when it mattered, he never hesitated.
Charlotte actually respected him for that.
Watching their backs as they left, she suddenly had the absurd feeling that the two of
them looked… right together.
“Why are you still standing here? The gala already started.”
Matthew had been unable to find anyone for too long, so he came out to look.
“And Nat-have you seen her?”
Charlotte answered with a sour edge. “No idea.”
Matthew’s gaze dropped to the dress she was wearing.
“Why are you wearing Ruby’s clothes?”
Charlotte said, “My dress got torn up by a dog. Ruby swapped with me.”
“A dog?”
Charlotte didn’t have the patience to explain.
“It’s started. Let’s go in.”
Tonight’s auction items were mostly paintings, calligraphy, and porcelain.
The entire thing was being broadcast live.
Charlotte really wanted to make Matthew bleed a little money, but she didn’t see

anything she truly liked.
Not until the final, headline piece rolled out.
Charlotte went completely still.

That top-grade, colored diamond necklace-wasn’t it the exact one she had sold?
Why was it here?
Just how filthy rich was the buyer, to donate this necklace for a charity auction?
Oh my God.
Charlotte couldn’t help the genuine shock.
This buyer wasn’t just loaded-they were a real philanthropist.
Matthew opened a text message Isabella had sent.
[Matt, I like this necklace.]
Matthew frowned and replied with a single word: “Okay.”
And of course, Charlotte saw it.
Heh.
So she really dared to ask for the moon.
Too bad. Charlotte wanted it too.
Then she’d have to fight for it.
She turned to him and spoke sweetly.
“Matt, didn’t you say if I liked anything at today’s auction, you’d buy it for me? Then this one. I think this necklace is really, really beautiful.”
Matthew’s brows knit even tighter.
It was just one necklace. How was he supposed to split it?
Charlotte looked at him. “Matt, are you going back on your word?”
His smile was tight, forced. “Of course not.”

The price had already been called up to one billion. Most people had stopped raising
their paddles.
Just when everyone thought this priceless necklace was about to go to Matthew,
someone lifted a paddle again.
Charlotte focused-and her eyes sharpened.
It was Steven.
Something clicked in her head, fast.
“Matt, that person… isn’t he Mr. Hall’s assistant?”
The moment Matthew heard that, he didn’t hesitate. He pushed the price higher on top
of Steven’s bid.
Back and forth, the necklace was finally shouted up to two billion.
Charlotte felt a rush of satisfaction.
Sure enough-Matthew couldn’t take provocation. The second he got triggered, his need
to win exploded.
Steven didn’t raise his paddle again.
Matthew won the necklace.
The entire room broke into thunderous applause.
The host specifically invited Matthew up on stage.
“On behalf of those children suffering from cerebral palsy, I want to thank Mr. Russell for
his incredible generosity. Mr. Russell truly is an outstanding entrepreneur-young.
accomplished, and so kindhearted.”
Truth was, during the bidding, Matthew had considered giving up more than once.
He didn’t-because he didn’t want to lose to Nathan.
The host’s flattery instantly made Matthew feel like the money was worth it.

“Mr. Russell, since you bought this necklace, you must be giving it to your wife, right?”
Matthew was put on the spot.
