Chapter 58 Better if She Freezes to Death
Charlotte’s lips curled into a cold, mocking smile.

“Shouldn’t the person you need to worry about right now be your biological daughter? Looks like, in your eyes, your daughter isn’t even worth as much as a necklace.”
Everly ground her teeth. “Stop trying to change the subject. And don’t even think about
driving a wedge between me and my daughter. I’m telling you right now-you don’t
have the right to take that necklace, and you don’t deserve to wear something that
expensive.”
“Charlotte! Give me the necklace!”
Charlotte didn’t even bother to respond.
Everly reached out and yanked at Charlotte’s clothes.
“Where’d you hide it?!”
Charlotte shoved her away. “I’ve had enough! Is putting your hands on people some kind
of disgusting family tradition in the Russell family?”
That one sentence completely set Lillian off.
“Archer!”
Archer was the Russell family’s butler-and also Lillian’s personal driver. He’d been with
her for nearly twenty years.
Thankfully, he hadn’t turned rotten just because he’d been around her so long.
Archer had always been steady and proper.
He didn’t pick sides. He didn’t talk too much. He just did his work quietly every day.
Sometimes, even when Lillian snapped at him, he stayed silent.
His presence was so low it was like he wasn’t even there.
“Lock this woman up for me!”
Archer hesitated, stuck on whether he should lay a hand on her.

Lillian snapped, “Why aren’t you moving?”
Charlotte didn’t show a trace of fear.
Archer lowered his voice. “I’m sorry, Young Madam.”

Charlotte knew she couldn’t get out of this today. She could only take the loss first.
They had the numbers. They spoke like they were certain. And they’d hated her to the bone for a long time. Even if she had wings, she wouldn’t be able to fly away.
So she simply wouldn’t fight.
Not if it meant risking the child in her belly.
Charlotte dodged Archer’s hand.
“Archer, let me walk on my own.”
Archer said, “Young Madam, this way.”
Very quickly, Charlotte was locked in the basement.
The basement was a wine cellar. Matthew kept plenty of rare, expensive bottles stored
down there.
Other than that, there was only one sofa.
It used to be the one in the living room.
Lillian thought the style looked dated, had a new one custom-made, and had this one
moved into the basement.
At least there was a sofa.
Otherwise, Charlotte would’ve had to sleep on the floor.
There were no windows in the basement. The light had to stay on constantly.
Charlotte had only thrown a coat over her evening dress.
For a short time, maybe it was fine. But if she stayed too long, she wouldn’t be able to
endure the cold down here.
She sat on the sofa, both hands covering her belly, like she was shielding the baby

inside.
She lit up her phone.
As expected-no signal.
So she couldn’t even call for help.
But then she thought about it again. Even if she could reach out, who would she call?
Even her own family wouldn’t come save her.
Lillian stared at Natalie’s injured face. The more she looked, the more her heart ached-
and the more it ached, the hotter the fire in her chest burned.
She had to use this chance to make that woman suffer.
This was getting out of hand.
Everly was still obsessing over the necklace.
“Mom, don’t forget to make her hand it over. That thing is worth a fortune. It was paid for
with Russell family money-we can’t let her take advantage and walk away with it.”
Lillian turned to Matthew, her voice icy.
“Matt, how could you be so foolish? Why would you give her something that expensive?”
Matthew was irritated beyond words.
Just now, he’d watched Charlotte walk toward the basement without even turning her
head. That lonely, helpless figure had pulled at something in his chest, leaving him
uncomfortable.
She was the one who’d done wrong-so why did he feel reluctant to punish her?
“Matt,” Everly reminded him, “Grandma’s talking to you.”
Matthew snapped back to himself. “I promised her.”
Lillian scoffed. “You could’ve tossed her any cheap trinket and been done with it. What is
she, that she deserves something that valuable?”
“Grandma.” Matthew’s temper was frayed, and his tone turned sharp.

“The charity gala was live. In front of that many people, if I don’t give it to my wife, then
who am I supposed to give it to?”
Lillian froze.
“Matt, what kind of attitude is that?”
“I don’t have an attitude.” Matthew didn’t want to argue. “I’m tired. I’m going back to my
room.”
He turned around and walked off.
Lillian watched him leave without looking back, and anger flared straight up.
Everly suddenly realized something.
“Mom… don’t you think Matt’s attitude toward that woman has changed?”
Lillian snorted. “I’m not blind. I noticed a long time ago.”
Everly asked, “What if he’s fallen for her?”
Lillian’s brows drew tight.
Right now, she still couldn’t be sure whether Matthew truly liked Charlotte.
But if he did… that would be trouble.
“Mom, why don’t I go ask him?”
Lillian shot her a cold look. “If you ask him, you think he’ll tell you the truth? Can’t you
see it? Your son isn’t on our side anymore.”
Everly’s heart jolted.
“Mom, what are you saying? How could Matt not be on our side? Even if he isn’t on the
same side as me, his mother, he’d definitely be on the same side as you, his grandma.”
Lillian’s gaze was sharp as a hook.
“I’m afraid someone’s been whispering in his ear, deliberately stirring up conflict in this
family-pushing Matt to stand against us.”
Everly understood immediately. “Mom… you mean Charlotte!”

Lillian said coldly, “That woman is absolutely not simple. On the surface she looks like
she’s always yielding, always swallowing it down. Who knows what kind of scheme
she’s planning behind our backs.”
