A maid went to open the door. Seeing a strange man standing there, she snapped, “Who

are you?”

The middle-aged man smiled politely. “I’m here to see Madam Collins.”

The maid frowned. “It’s late. What do you want with our madam? Who are you, exactly?”

He handed over a business card. “Please give this to your madam.”

The maid took it, reluctant.

Two minutes later.

Lillian came hurrying over.

“Mr. Crane!” Lillian’s scher Chapter Unlocked, Enjoy Reading!ced by a smile piled thick. “Oh my, oh my-Mr. Crane, what a sin on my part. How could I let you make the

trip here in person?”

The visitor was the city bureau’s leader, Foster Crane.

He hadn’t been transferred to Sunriver long.

Countless people wanted to curry favor with him, and every single one had been shut

out.

Lillian had tried to pull strings to visit him before, too. She’d never managed to.

And now he was here, standing at her door. It was way beyond anything Lillian

expected.

“Dropping by this late, I hope I’m not intruding,” Foster said.

“Not at all, not at all. Mr. Crane, welcome. Please, come in.”

Then she didn’t forget to remind Everly.

“Go call Matt down. Tell him we have an important guest.”

Everly ran upstairs, completely bewildered.

Lillian had the best tea brought out.

Foster got straight to the point.

“I came tonight because of the charity gala.”

Lillian listened with the utmost respect.

“Your Russell Group donated two billion at the charity auction today. That completely

exceeded our expectations, and it solved an urgent problem for us. I’m here on behalf of

those children with cerebral palsy who can’t afford treatment, to sincerely thank you.”

Just moments ago, Lillian had been aching over that two billion.

Now, all that pain vanished.

She hadn’t expected a single two-billion donation to earn a personal visit from Mr. Crane

to express thanks.

It meant their connections would only grow wider from here.

Lillian put on a benevolent expression.

“To be honest, every time I think of those children unable to afford medical care, my

heart hurts. That’s why I told Matt again and again-no matter how tight the company’s

cash flow is, we still have to do more good, contribute more to Sunriver. That’s what a

true entrepreneur should do.”

Foster smiled slightly. “Madam Collins having that awareness is Sunriver’s good

fortune.”

Matthew came downstairs.

Lillian immediately introduced him. “Mr. Crane, this is my grandson, Matthew.”

“Matt, this is Mr. Crane, newly transferred to our city.”

Matthew bent slightly and offered his hand. “Mr. Crane.”

Foster looked him over. “As expected of someone raised by Madam Collins. You’re

clearly exceptional.”

Lillian was just about to flatter him when-

Foster continued, “Why don’t I see your wife?”

Everyone froze.

Everyone except Foster.

“I watched the live broadcast today,” he said calmly. “It’s obvious you two are very much

in love. I’m sure Mrs. Russell supported this donation a great deal as well. I should thank her in person.”

Matthew glanced at Lillian.

Lillian quickly reined in her expression and scolded him lightly, “Matt, honestly. Why

didn’t you call Charlie down with you?”

Matthew seemed to finally breathe easier.

“Okay. I’ll go get her.”

Upstairs.

Charlotte had curled up on the couch.

Only like this could she feel even a little warmer.

But she knew this wasn’t a solution. She was genuinely afraid she’d freeze to death here

tonight.

“Charlie.”

Charlotte thought she’d imagined it.

Even if she was hallucinating, there was no way it should be Matthew’s scumbag voice.

Matthew strode over. “What are you spacing out for? Come on. Mr. Crane is here. He

wants to see you.”

Charlotte was utterly confused.

“What Mr. Crane?”

“Don’t ask. Just come out first.”

Without giving her a choice, he grabbed her and pulled her along.

Charlotte didn’t struggle. She let him drag her.

Fine.

At least she could go out and warm up.

When Foster saw Charlotte, he greeted her first.

“You must be Mrs. Russell.”

Charlotte paused.

Lillian hurriedly urged her, “Child, what are you standing there for? Say hello to Mr.

Crane!”

Charlotte understood.

This Mr. Crane was absolutely not someone to underestimate.

That was the only reason Lillian’s attitude had flipped so fast.

“Hello, Mr. Crane,” Charlotte said. “I’m Charlotte.”

She didn’t even want to say the words Madam Russell.

Foster’s smile warmed. “Mm. You look like a bright, kind-hearted young woman. But since you’re home, why are you still in an evening gown? Be careful not to catch a chill.”

Charlotte deliberately glanced at Lillian. “Things got busy when I came back. I didn’t

have time to change.”

Lillian guiltily looked away.

“Madam Collins,” Foster said, “having a granddaughter-in-law like this is a true

blessing.”

Lillian felt irritated, but she could only nod through it.

“Yes. My granddaughter-in-law is indeed very good.”

Foster turned to Charlotte. “There’s a charity award ceremony in the city tomorrow.

Perfect timing. You and your husband should attend together, and do a TV interview as

well.”

“Okay. Thank you, Mr. Crane,” Charlotte said.

Her instincts told her she probably wouldn’t be locked in the basement tonight.

Mr. Crane had shown up at exactly the right time, like a savior dropped straight from the

sky.

Everything that happened today had blown past anything Charlotte expected.

None of it seemed connected-yet somehow it all linked together.

Was it really just coincidence?

“All right,” Foster said. “I won’t disturb you any longer.”

Lillian personally escorted him out.

Smiling the entire way.

Bowing and scraping as if it was second nature.

Charlotte didn’t like the sight of it.

But she understood.

When officials and businessmen were tangled together like this, having someone that

powerful backing you made everything easier.

As Foster was about to leave, he suddenly turned back.
