I had never been afraid of thunderstorms.
The moment the storm hit, I jerked awake. I could hear the branches of the trees snapping as the wind howled outside. Somewhere in the distance there was a loud boom of thunder sounded, making the windows rattle, and seconds later lightning lit the room.
On unsteady legs, I pulled the blanket over my shoulders and snuck out of the bedroom. My steps faltered when I entered the living room and spotted Derek sitting on the couch, staring at the burning fire in the fireplace.
I took a small step back but another round of thunder made me hurry closer to him.
He smiled. “Scared?”
“N–not usually.”
Derek patted the couch next to him.
I settled on the couch as far away from him as I could. Clutching the blanket under my chin, I stared at the dancing flames for a few seconds before I turned my head to study Derek’s side profile.
His nostrils flared.
I frowned when he tensed.
“Do you have an omega for yourself?” I asked him.
“No.”
“Do you want an omega?”
He sighed. “Someday.”
“I’ve been thinking about what you said earlier,” I muttered.
“Yeah?”
I licked my lips and got a little more comfortable. “I’m scared. Scared of the past and the future. I’m scared that if I agree to be their mate that they will regret it in a few years.”
“What makes you think that they will?”
“I can’t go with Alex to any of the events he usually attends. I can’t go out with Val or show up at his job to support him.”
Derek turned sideways to face me more. “What makes you think it’s what they want?”
I blinked at him, not expecting him to ask me that. My lips parted but I pursed them instead when no answer came to mind.
“Like I said, I’ve been watching you,” he muttered. “Neither of them has given me any indication that they are unhappy about the fact that you don’t do…normal omega things with them. They are perfectly happy going home to you.”

I looked away. Surely they wanted some normality. Normal omegas went out with their alphas, shopping and eating at fancy restaurants. They went to movies and other social events. They did normal things.
“If they really cared about all of that shit, they wouldn’t have given you a second glance,” Derek said. “Your alphas like you as you are, Daisy. They don’t want you to change and I’m pretty sure that they will never get tired of you.”
Despite his words, my mind was racing with how things could turn out a few years from now. It would be so easy to just give in and let things take it’s course, but I was scared.
They made me feel things I had never felt before.
“Can a bond be broken?” I asked.
Derek cleared his throat. “When a mate dies, yes.”
My eyes darted around the cabin and then locked on him again. I blinked, surprised to find him still watching
I swallowed. “H–How did you and your brothers get into this?” I asked him. “Surely you didn’t just wake up one day and decided that you want to rescue omegas for a living.”
“Are you expecting a tragic backstory?”
“No.” I frowned. “Is it tragic?”
“No.”
He rubbed the back of his neck as he turned back to face the fire. “Our sister recently took over as director for an Omega Center in a dead beat town. There are a lot of omegas that were abused and placed in danger due to the old director who took advantage of his position. She asked us to help out a few times.” Pausing, he glanced at me. “Would you like some tea?”
I blinked at him.
Before I could answer him, he stood and hurried into the kitchen.
I turned to watch him over the back of the couch.
He moved around the kitchen with ease. Pulling cups out of the cabinets and filling an old kettle with water, he placed it on the stove and turned on the gas.
“So you just decided to keep helping?”
“Yes.”
“Do you like it?”
Derek didn’t immediately answer me. He finished the tea and then carried the cups over to the couch. After hesitating a second, he handed the cup over to me, but didn’t take a seat again. He walked closer to the fireplace.
“No,” he finally answered.
“Why?”

“It’s like taking care of a sick animal,” he muttered. “You rescue them, take care of them, built a friendship. You know that it’s going to die yet you can’t stop yourself from developing feelings.”
“Have you developed feeling for omegas you rescued?”
“Friendships,” he said softly. “Drink your tea Daisy.”
I sniffed the light brown liquid. My nose wrinkled when the smell of herbs filled my nostrils. It wasn’t the tea l was used to. I took a small sip and nearly spit it back out.
“Drink it.”
“You’re drugging me again.”
“For your own good,” he growled.
“My own good?” I gasped.
I placed the cup down on the coffee table and got to my feet. The blanket slipped from my shoulders and for the first time since I got up, I noticed the layer of sweat coating my skin.
“Please just drink the tea, Daisy.”
I shook my head and took a step back.
Derek turned. Another growl fell from his lips. I spun around, ready to run, but tripped over the blanket. The air got knocked from my lungs when I hit the ground.
Before I had time to comprehend what just happened, Derek gripped my arm and rolled me onto my back. He straddled my hips, leaning down until his face hovered inches from mine.
“I’ll force it down your throat if I have to,” he growled.
“No!”
Sneering, he gripped my wrist and jerked my hand down to the front of his pants. I paled, horror filling me when my fingers clenched around his hard cock.
“I’m only a man, Daisy. I can control myself but only for so long.” His voice was horse and filled with emotions.” You should have told me that your heat is close.”
“You didn’t exactly give me a chance to do anything!”
“I told you it’s for your safety.” He let go of my wrist and leaned forward to plant his hands on either side of my head. “The tea will work the same as the suppressants. It won’t last as long, but it should give me a chance to figure something out.”
I sucked in a breath and unconsciously gripped his cock.
Derek gasped, his body shuddering. Leaning forward he dropped his forehead to mine and carefully pulled my hand away from his cock.
We breathed the same air as we stared down at each other.

“How long have you been taking the suppressants?” he asked huskily.
I had to swallow a few times to find my voice. “A–a w–week and a half, maybe.”
His eyes fluttered closed.
“It’s b–bad?”
He gave one stiff nod. “Keep still,” he ordered.
My muscles tensed. I held my breath when his face dipped down to my neck. Gripping the hem of my shirt, he tugged it aside and ran his nose along the crook of my neck.
“You’re already starting to perfume,” he whispered. “Don’t be alarmed, I’m just going to…” Derek trailed off as he raised my wrist to his mouth.
My eyes widened when his lips parted. He licked me. I jerked at the unexpected warmth and wetness of his tongue on my skin. A low moan fell from my lips before I could stop it.
His fingers dug into my skin for a few seconds before they loosened.
Swallowing, I got to his feet and took a few steps back. “I know it tastes like shit, but I need you to drink the tea. I’m going to call my brothers and make a plan to get your alphas here.”
I nodded as I sat up. I felt hot and cold and shaky at the same time.
“Did you get hurt?”
Shaking my head, I got to my feet and stared down at the cup.
“Drink the tea and then go back to your room. No matter how hot you get, don’t open the window. We don’t want to attract attention from unwanted visitors.”
Derek handed me the cup and then spun on his heels to hurry out of the cabin. Clutching the cup tightly, I picked up the blanket and hurried to the room. I kicked the door closed and sank down on the edge of the bed.
My stomach revolted at the thought of drinking the tea, but I managed to force it down.
Placing the empty cup aside, I curled up on the bed.
Please let they come soon.
