Cassian.

I watched how her face paled. The color drained from her skin though she had just witnessed something horrible. Instead, it was me who couldn’t move for a single second, my miscles locked tight beneath my skin, jaw clenched so hard it ached.

I looked at Carolyn and then the man standing next to her. Right behind them, there was a passage. My eyes sharpened the moment I realized Estelle was there. The scent was faint, but it was mockingly present, crawling into my senses like a challenge.setl

“Ca… Cassian?” Carolyn whispered, her voice trembling.

A sharp slap landed right across her face.

“Don’t call my name with that filthy mouth, Carolyn!” I snarled, my hand still hovering in the air for a fraction of a second before slowly lowering.

I never hit she-wolves. But people who betrayed their own people, family, and land-I never gave a fuck about gender.

Carolyn fell to the floor, her eyes wide with horror, her lip busted open. Blood coated her mouth, and the taste mixed with a faint scent of omega-floral and milky-spreading through the pom. It sickened me.

“Lady Carolyn!” The man rushed toward her.

Before he could take another step, Lorenzo grabbed his arm and twisted it until the sound of snapping joints echoed, followed by a scream.

“Stay where you are, bastard!” Lorenzo growled, pinning him against the floor with brutal force.

“Elijah!” Carolyn cried out, dragging herself forward, trying to reach him.

“Elijah?” Lorenzo looked up at me, his eyes dark and calculating Wasn’t that the name of her first mate she rejected?”

My gaze hardened as I looked at him-Elijah-wearing a black robe. His fingers were clenched tightly around a piece of paper. I stepped forward and snatched it from his hand without warning.

“Don’t touch it, Cassian. Listen to us. It’s not what it looks like!” Carolyn screamed, her voice cracking as tears streamed down her face.

“Shut up!”

My roar thundered through the room, vibrating the walls. She flinched violently, shrinking in on herself.

I opened the note he was holding, and a slow, icy shiver ran down my spine.

“DA Dungeon, Frae Desert, Northern Region,” I read, my voice low as my eyes narrowed.

“An address?” Lorenzo said, looking at me sharply. “Someone is there.”

He pressed Elijah down harder, his knee digging in, ready to discate more than just joints.

“What’s there? Tell us!” Lorenzo’s wolf growled beneath his voice

Elijah tried to move, lifting his hand toward the passage with a sange, desperate gesture. Before he could finish, Lorenzo stepped down on his hand.

“Sweet talk won’t work on them, Lorenzo.” I turned slowly, my gaze locking onto Carolyn as she gasped. “Traitors don’t get to enjoy sweet talk?

Carolyn trembled under my stare, her entire body shaking. Lorenzo smirked, the kind of expression that only appeared when he was given silent permission to do something illegal.

“No. Cass. Let me explain. Let me explain.” She sobbed, desperation seeping into every word. “I’m telling you everything. Just don’t kill him. He’s just following me!”

“Following you?” I sat down on the couch, resting my chin on my list. My movements were slow, deliberate, controlled. Rage surged beneath my skin, veins bulging along my arms. “Let’s hear what you have to say.”

Carolyn slowly got up, but Lorenzo pushed her back down to her knees. I couldn’t help but notice the disappointment in his eyes. Lorenzo had been coddling her far more than I ever did. I was pretty sure he knew many things about her. But he wouldn’t betray me over this.

Though doubts crept in, cold and unwelcome.

“Stay there and speak. I trusted you. I forgave your mischievousness and scheming wrongdoings. But I never thought you would betray us!” Lorenzo’s body shook with rage and disgust.

He turned toward me. “I am sorry. Your Majesty. There are many things she has done behind your back, and I didn’t let you know. But I had no idea she was a traitor!”

The genuine guilt on his face weighed heavily.

“We will talk about it later, Lorenzo,” I said calmly. “Let’s hear her out first.”

Carolyn cried as she lowered her head and began. “Roana is in that dungeon. Keane took her there.”

“What?” My eyes widened, the stillness breaking for the first time “What did you say?”

“I am sorry. Keane asked me to kill Alexander because he knew who was behind the rogue attacks in our territory. I gave him the poison.” She sobbed between words. “But.before dying, he exposed some truth to Roana we needed to get rid of. The attack six months ago, when you flew away from the Galie Forest-it was me who ordered it. To get rid of you.”

She looked up at me, tears streaming down her face.

“You wanted to kill me? You mean all the attacks…?”

“Yes. I have a deal with the Northern Region. I will give Elle to them, and they will kill you!”

“How dare you!” Lorenzo snarled. “He gave you everything. The hand that fed you, you bit it?”

Carolyn stared at him as if struck, then-when I thought it couldn’t get worse-she started laughing. Real laughter. Guiltless. Sharp. It echoed through the room.

“So what?” She wiped her tears with a smirk. “All I wanted was this territory to be mine. And to have it, I need to get rid of this Lycan King.”

“What?” Lorenzo breathed. “You wanted to rule this territory? Is this some kind of game to you?”

“Why not? As long as he’s dead, I can do anything. Including killing him.”

“Lies” I smirked, leaning back into the chair, my eyes glinting coldly. “Carolyn is too stupid to greed the throne, Lorenzo
