“How’re you gonna explain things to Natalie?” Rather than immediately grilling me about Aaliyah, she unexpectedly lobbed this trickier question my way.

“I… haven’t come up with anything yet,” I admitted, my thoughts in disarray. How could I explain? Blame Aaliyah’s jealousy? Claim we were just old friends?

“What’s the big deal about explaining?” Grace butted in sourly. “It’s Natalie who started acting up first, giving that woman an opening. That article might not be all true, but there’s gotta be some truth to it. A low-rank half-blood Beta landing all those projects? There’s no way she didn’t use some Alpha-charming tricks.”

This time, Louisa didn’t scold Grace like she usually did. She just sat there quietly, her fingers gently rapping on the cane.

I couldn’t hold back. “Mom! Natalie’s not like that. I know her inside out!” The words burst out, surprising me with the protectiveness in them.

“You know her?” Grace scoffed, saying, “Then tell me, what’s she up to by running away? Breaking the mate bond?”

I was struck dumb. I couldn’t spill the beans about our fake marriage.

Louisa let out a cold, knowing laugh.

“Stop pulling the wool over my eyes. Aaliyah came back to stay here before, didn’t she?” she said, eyeing Grace and me.

I shot a panicked look at Grace, and she started shaking her head like a bobblehead.

Louisa’s POV:

“I had it checked out. I’m old, but I’ve been through the pack power plays, I can see through you kids’ games,” I said matter-of-factly.

The moment Aaliyah started hanging around Landon more often, I smelled a rat. An Omega tutor getting so chummy with her Alpha student? Natalie’s as sharp as a tack. Even if she didn’t know about their past, she might catch on.

Landon’s POV:

With Louisa calling our bluff, Grace and I didn’t dare to deny it.

Grace let out a quiet sigh of relief and quickly tried to defend me. “Louisa, it was all that scheming Aaliyah. She was out to get Landon. He was so wrapped up in work and the pack stuff that he didn’t see it coming…” As she spoke, she nudged me.

But I just stood there, head down, silent. Could I really pin it all on Aaliyah? I couldn’t. Ten years of

relationship and Nathan… I wasn’t blameless.

“Enough. If I were here to pick a fight, I wouldn’t be wasting my breath on you all,” I said, gripping my cane with both hands and sighing in frustration.

I’d chosen Natalie back then because of her sweetness and the help she could offer Landon. That was why I’d felt at ease stepping back to enjoy my retirement. Little did I expect that in such a short time, even she would become so hard to handle.

“Looks like Aaliyah’s the reason Natalie’s mad at you. But the mastermind’s been dealt with. You should go to Natalie, apologize, and explain that it was just Aaliyah pestering you. Get her to come back home,” I ordered, my tone brooking no argument.

Landon’s POV:

I was torn. Aaliyah was in the wrong, but Natalie’s coldness and determination these days had wounded my pride. I’d given her so many chances to make up, and I’d stood up for her when she was slandered, yet she just turned me down..

Grace was reluctant to see me grovel, but one sharp look from Louisa silenced her before she could say a word.

Louisa didn’t give us a chance to argue. She simply picked up the landline and dialed Natalie’s number.

One missed call, then she dialed again.

“It’s still early. She might not be up yet…” I blurted out, worried that Natalie wouldn’t even give Louisa the respect she deserved.

But Louisa was persistent. Finally, the call went through.

“Hello?” Natalie’s sleepy voice came through. Clearly, she was still half-asleep.

“Natalie…” Louisa’s voice instantly turned warm and kind.

Natalie’s POV:

“Hello?” I said.

On the other end of the line came Louisa’s familiar, overly-sweet voice-like sugar-coated thorns pricking my heart, chasing away the last traces of sleep.
