She immediately started to complain, her voice sounding weak and pitiful, “I’m feeling a bit better physically, but my mood is in the dumps. I used to stay at your place. Now the servants here are so clumsy -I just can’t get used to life here.” Louisa knew I used to be soft-hearted and would fall for this kind of act.
“You could move to Landon’s villa then,” I replied calmly, unmoved.
“What’s the point of going back without you? Natalie, you’re like my own granddaughter. You know I love you more than Landon!” Louisa emphasized, trying to guilt-trip me with our past bond.
Her words did make my chest tighten a bit. Once upon a time, I’d truly respected and cared for her as an elder, and she’d indeed protected me in some ways. But that was all based on my identity as “Landon’s obedient mate”. Once it came to the real interests of Thorn Pack and her precious grandson, that so-called “kindness” was nothing but a castle in the air.
Seeing me silent, Louisa seized the opportunity. “I understand what goes on between mates. You’re just jealous and got the wrong idea. Once you clear things up, I’m sure you still can’t let go of Landon!”
A misunderstanding? I almost let out a sneer.
“A misunderstanding?” I repeated, waiting for her “explanation”.
“Yeah, I’ve heard about what happened online. That Aaliyah deserves it!” Her tone suddenly turned sharp with undisguised disgust when she mentioned Aaliyah. I almost thought she was finally going to come clean. But the next second, she shifted the blame completely.
“She’s an old spinster, jealous of your happy relationship with Landon. That’s why she had these bad ideas. But I can assure you, Landon only has eyes for you. Aaliyah just took advantage of being his former tutor to get close to him, but there’s nothing between them! Natalie, don’t wrong Landon over such a small thing.”
She spoke earnestly, every word defending Landon, painting Aaliyah as a lovesick, crazy woman and Landon as an innocent victim of her harassment. I found her far-fetched and self-deluding words ridiculous and sad.
After Louisa finished, she thrust the phone at Landon. “Landon, come here. In front of me, tell Natalie there’s nothing between you and Aaliyah.”
“Grandma…” Landon’s voice was hesitant and reluctant.
“Don’t bother,” I said almost at the same time. My voice was as cold as ice. It might sound like a tantrum on the phone, but only I knew it was a complete realization and determination.
“Louisa, I didn’t tell you before because you were sick. But Landon and I are done.” The words came out clearly, bringing a sense of relief.
There was an instant silence on the other end, followed by Louisa’s shocked and trembling voice. “Done? Natalie, you can’t say such things! You two are bound by the mate bond. You can’t break it without the

I said, my voice steady and resolute, “Yes, I’m going to break the mate bond with Landon. But it doesn’t have to be so complicated. We just need to part ways-we both know it’s over.”
