I was in a rotten mood, and Eleanor’s taunts were like a match to gunpowder. “Can you shut it? You’re as annoying as a yapping dog,” I snapped back, then spun around, desperate to escape this suffocating party.
Suddenly, a glass of ice-cold, cherry-red juice came crashing down on my head! The sticky liquid dripped down my hair, drenching my white spaghetti-strap dress in an instant. It felt like a thousand icicles stabbing me. I froze, acutely aware that all eyes had turned towards me, filled with shock, disgust, and a touch of voyeuristic glee..
Eleanor sauntered over, feigning innocence. “Oops, my bad… So sorry, Chloe. Maybe you should go change? Or just head home. You know, looking like this, people’ll talk. They’ll say the second heiress of the Kelly family’s always a hot mess.” Her voice was sweet but laced with venom, just loud enough for the onlookers to catch every word.
A servant scurried over with a towel, but I swatted their hand away. Rage and humiliation boiled inside me, ready to erupt. I whipped around and, under the spotlight of everyone’s stares, landed a stinging slap on Eleanor’s smug face!
The sound echoed through the room like a thunderclap.
Natalie’s POV:
Leonardo and I had just arrived at the banquet with his grandparents when the commotion reached our ears. I could hear Eleanor’s shrill screeches and Chloe’s icy comebacks. Curiosity got the better of me, and when I looked over, there was Chloe, drenched in juice, and then, in one swift motion, she slapped Eleanor across the face.
Chaos ensued. Chloe’s parents rushed over at the sound of the ruckus. Eleanor threw herself into her father’s arms, sobbing crocodile tears. “Dad! I spilled the drink by accident, and Chloe just attacked me!”
Michael Kelly’s face darkened with anger. “Chloe, you’re always making a fool of yourself. Can’t you act like a lady in public? Apologize to Eleanor right this instant and go home. Reflect on your behavior!”
“Why should I apologize when she’s the one who started it? If you love your real daughter so much, why did you adopt me? It just makes us all look bad,” Chloe retorted coolly. She took the towel from a servant and wiped her face and dress nonchalantly, completely unfazed by the whispers and stares around her. Then she started to walk away.
Michael’s pride was wounded. ‘Chloe’s words were like a dagger to his ego. “You ungrateful brat! You’re not leaving until you say sorry to Eleanor!” he barked.
He grabbed Chloe roughly and pulled her in front of Eleanor.
Chloe let out a scornful laugh. “I’m not saying sorry. What are you gonna do, huh?”
I caught sight of Michael raising his hand, as if he were about to land a blow oh Chloe. But Chloe stood her ground, not budging an inch. There was even a sneering smile on her face.

She looked like a cornered lone wolf. Completely drenched and looking utterly disheveled, she still defiantly held her head high. With an air of cold aloofness, she built a wall of indifference around herself, rebuffing any attempt at sympathy or approach from others.
At that very moment, my eyes fell on Liam, standing behind her parents. His fists were balled up tightly, his jaw clenched so hard that the muscles stood out. His eyes were filled with a complex tangle of emotions that he was desperately trying to keep in check.
I couldn’t just stand by and watch this unfold.
“Mr. Kelly, hold your horses!” I quickly strode forward, grabbed Chloe by the arm, and positioned myself between her and the Kelly family, acting as a human shield. Leonardo and his grandparents trailed behind me. Their arrival instantly hushed the noisy chatter around us.
When Michael saw me and the Sanchez family behind me, he quickly reined in his anger and forced a smile. “Ms. Anderson, it’s not that I want to spoil the party. It’s just that this adopted daughter of mine is so unruly. She really got on my nerves.”
“I get it. Every family has its own set of problems,” I replied, maintaining a polite smile. I glanced at Chloe’s soiled clothes and then at the clear handprint on Eleanor’s face. “Ms. Chloe Kelly is quite feisty. Sometimes she can be a bit impulsive. But look at her now. She’s been splashed with juice in public and is being scolded. It’s only natural for her to be angry. Give her some time to cool off, won’t you?”
My words instantly riled up Eleanor. She lifted her head from her mother’s arms, her eyes teary but full of hatred. “Natalie! Stay out of this! Even if I spilled the juice on her, it was Chloe who hit me first. She’s the one in the wrong!”
When Chloe felt Liam’s eyes on her, she jerked her hand out of mine as if she’d been burned. Her voice was icy. “This has nothing to do with you. Don’t interfere,” she said to me.
I could empathize with her reluctance to accept my help. She was in a complete mess, looking like a drowned rat, and there was Liam, witnessing her at her absolute lowest. And then here I came, an outsider, sticking my nose into her business. Her pride, that precious and fragile thing, simply couldn’t bear such a blow.
