Camilla was halfway out the door when his words made her freeze.
Catheleen was caught off guard too. She glanced at Camilla, then turned to Lambert. “Lambert… what did you want to say? Is it something I can't hear?”
Lambert just shot her a cold look.
She immediately retracted, shrinking into her seat. “Alright, alright. I’ll let you talk,” she said, tumbling out of the car and hovering by the back window.
Camilla hurried to roll down the window.
Catheleen leaned in. “Cammie, I’ll wait for you inside, okay? Don’t be scared.” Then she dashed off down the sidewalk.
Lambert pressed his fingers to his temples, clearly exasperated.
Scared. What was she so scared of? Of him?
With silence stretching, Camilla took the initiative. “Mr. White, did you want to talk about something?”
Lambert glanced at her in the rearview mirror. Their eyes met for a heartbeat before Camilla quickly looked away.
He turned in his seat to face her. “Are you alright?”
Something about his gentle tone broke her last string of composure. The emotions she’d tried so hard to hold in threatened to spill over.
Her throat tightened. Her eyes burned, and she blinked hard to keep it together.
“I’m… I’m fine,” she mumbled.
But as soon as she spoke, her voice sounded thick and trembly. The tears she’d kept back welled up. She sniffled, trying to fight them off, but one still slid down her hand.
“Don’t cry. Here. Use this,” Lambert said quietly, offering her a handkerchief.
His voice was so gentle it made her feel unsteady, like her defenses had slipped without permission.
She shook her head. “It’s fine. I’ll just get it dirty…”
He couldn’t help it.
In those dreams, she was heat and gravity—pulling him under until he forgot what restraint even meant. The same look she was giving him now.
Lambert swore under his breath and turned away, pulling at his tie, trying to get his breathing back under control. How could he even be thinking this way right now?
Camilla had no idea what was going through his head. All she saw was the sudden shift in his expression as he settled stiffly back into the driver’s seat, staring straight ahead, cold and distant again.
That version of Lambert felt a million miles away.
She twisted the handkerchief in her hands, feeling lost and unsure.
The silence dragged on.
Remembering his earlier question, Camilla finally spoke, her voice tentative. “Mr. White, how do you want me to thank you? About your shirt from last time… I haven’t finished working on it yet…”
Lambert clenched his fists in his lap, fighting to tamp down the desire burning under his skin.
