Camilla quickly wiped the tears from her eyes.
She turned around, forcing a smile. "You're back? You didn't get to eat much earlier, come sit down."
Catheleen noticed her red-rimmed eyes and immediately asked, "What happened? Why did Lambert leave? Did he give you a hard time?"
What Catheleen didn't mention was that although her brother looked upset, his entire demeanor had radiated a profound, isolating loneliness. It was as if he had suffered a devastating blow. She had never seen him look like that before.
Camilla shook her head. "No, of course not... Please don't ask, it's really nothing. He probably just had a sudden emergency. Sit down and eat!"
Catheleen was indeed still hungry. Even though she couldn't get any answers, it was obvious Camilla didn't want to talk about it, so she didn't press the issue.
After a few bites, she asked, "Why aren't you eating?"
Camilla had completely lost her appetite. "I'm full."
Catheleen glanced at the dishes on the table. They looked exactly as they had when she left.
"You ate so little?" Catheleen said. "My brother made this. Who knows how long it'll be before we get to taste his cooking again."
Camilla fell silent for a few seconds before quietly picking up her silverware.
Catheleen scooped some food onto her plate. "That's more like it. Eat up, don't let his hard work go to waste!"
Camilla ended up eating a lot.
Catheleen said she didn't know when they would get to eat his food again. Camilla felt like she might never have the chance for the rest of her life.
She had said those awful things. She had told him she hated him.
Forget Lambert—even an ordinary man wouldn't be able to handle that. Let alone someone of his elite status, born into privilege and surrounded by people who constantly worshipped him.
He had probably never been rejected in his entire life, nor had anyone ever dared to say they hated him.
Yes, a man as brilliant and flawless as him—no one could possibly hate him.
